Hi there!

I'm so happy to have found this forum! My husband and I are hoping to have a baby but it appears that I have a problem with cervical mucus so it is likely we will be proceeding with IUI in order to conceive (just going through all the tests etc now).

My lung function is about 46% and is very stable, although this year I have had quite a few IV courses (every 2 months roughly). My CF team say they feel that I have a good chance of getting through a pregnancy ok and they are very supportive. However I know that this will certainly be a high-risk pregnancy and I will need very close monitoring.

I would love to hear from any other CF women who have been through IUI and/or pregnancy and who may have had similar health to me when they did so. Can't wait to get reading all the posts on here...it's such a relief to find a whole group of people in exactly the same situation as me!

EJ, Welcome! I'm glad you found the pregnancy section. It is a wonderful resource. I had a wonderful pregnancy and vaginally delivered July 10, 2007 a healthy baby boy. He is doing wonderfully. Since his birth - at 3 mo. - we learned he has two cf mutations dispite thinking my husband was not a carrier. He is presently asymptomatic.

Many cf doctors in America actively discourage their patients from persueing pregnancy. Most don't support their patients even considering it if they
are below 50% FEV1. I'm glad you have a team that is working with you and if you haven't already I encourage you to read all you can about cf & pregnancy.

I conceived naturally with charting and temperature taking. I have very thick cervical mucus. Feel free to ask me any questions.

Welcome EJ!

Hi!

I think this site is a great resource for Cf moms and those wanting to become moms. I have two kids : one was concieved easily with no intervention, the other was concieved after a medicated IUI. One birth was medicated, the other 100% natural, so anything you need, feel free to ask or PM me. I also have been breastfeeding (as have most of the Cf moms here) for 14 months. So it is all possible with good monitoring and medical care. My FEV! is in the 70s and has been for both pregnancies.

Welcome and good luck!

welcome ej. this site has been an amazing resource for me through planning my pregnancy, birth and now. i conceived naturally and had a baby girl in june of 07. luckily i had an unmedicated, natural vaginal birth.
we planned the pregnancy for over a year. i started at a cf clinic with an fev1 in the 40/50s and upped it to 75% in 1.5 yrs. with the help of a fantastic cf team and lots of research on my own and used alot of natural supplements.

its true that the cf foundation docs recommend pregnancy starts with an fev1 of 50% or higher. my doctor wanted me to have a personal goal of 70% higher. having been through this i'd recommend you do all you can do to up your fev1. read up, ask people who have done this (by coming to a forum like this!), and work hard. i was told all my life i wouldn't be able to do it, and here I am-very healthy for a cfer with a wonderful baby.

pregnancy will lower your fev1 bc the baby is pushing on your lungs and restricting your breathing. this happens for everyone. if you have a higher lung capacity you will get through the preg better. also being a mom and being up at night with a baby is hard on your body. having the best health you can before getting pregnant makes this easier. you want to be home with baby taking care of it, not run down. this all takes good planning. i'm so glad u have a cf team working with you. what are they saying about pregnancy for you?

pregnancy is not a one size fits all for cfers. it affects us all differently and theres so many factors that go into it.

this is definitely within your reach. with hard work, patience and determination-you'll reach your goal. there's alot of us out here.

wish you the best and please ask anything-i'm glad to help or pass on my experiences if i can.
