So tired of antibiotics...

Hi All!

Haven't posted here in a long time, but hoping for some CF mom wisdom on this one. I know I'm sort of "preaching to the choir" here, but I'm so over antibiotics that I might just lose it if I hear the word "bactrim" again; what do you all do when your little people get the sniffles/allergies cough/post-nasal-drip?

We bump up the vests and nebs, but I'm feeling like I'm missing something. I try and wait it out, but my fear of it turning into something else or worse, usually doesn't let us get past three days before calling the CF doc. I was thinking Vitamin C might help? We've been steaming up the bathtub. I know cough syrup is out of the question, but do you use medicated nasal sprays? We've been doing saline, but nothing fancy.

Much obliged folks! Thanks!

We have recently started nasal steroids and Flovent, but now only during colds. It seems to help clear things up without antibiotics. On our 3rd cold in a row now and didn't need antibiotics to clear it up....this is not a scientific study, but it seems to be doing the trick.

work outs at the gym or anything that gets you moving. allergy shots help if someone helps allergies. hot teas helps. honey helps to calm the tickle in the throat. sinus rinese help get the junk out in the head.

WE do a lot to keep the boys from getting sick and it seems to be working...I will just tell you all we do and perhaps you might be interested in some of it.
If they do end up getting sick, we just up everything we do on a regular basis. We do high doses of Vitamin C all the time..I believe they take 1500mg a day and when they look like they are getting sick, I give 500mg extra in the morning and another 500mg in the evening.
We add garlic pills when they seem like they are getting sick. We do colloidal/ionice silver once a week to boost the immune system and then twice a day when there is a possible sickness. We do zinc on a regular basis and then I up it.
We do glyconutrients on a regular basis, which help to boost the immune system...they have a product with colostrum in it that the boys take if they have been exposed to sickness.
We do essential oils...thieves oil, oregano and melaleuca almost daily and up it when sick...
This sounds like so much when I write it down, but so far so good:)
Ask away if you have any specific questions!!! I have a bit on my blog, but not all

blessings,
missa

Thank you all for your responses! This has been so helpful!

I'm definitely going to ask the CF docs about flovent and nasal steroids for when we notice a cold coming on. Alot of the time, I believe it starts out as a post-nasal-drip thing and progresses from there, so if we could cut it off without antibiotics, that'd be great!!

Missa, what is your blog link? We've added an Immune C product with vitamin C, zinc, and echinacea, but I don't think that has the levels of vitamin C that you referenced using. I'd definitely like to know more though! How old are your boys? My kiddos are 3 1/2 and 2.

Thanks again everyone!

One thing my parents did when I would get sick is to let me have cough syrup, but only at night. In their view, yes coughing was a necessary evil, but sleep was also pretty important to getting better. If my coughing was keeping me up at night, I would get half a dose so I could fall asleep. That way, my cough wasn't fully suppressed, but I could get some restful sleep.

To help keep myself from getting sick, I carry a small bottle of hand disinfectant with me at all times. I also have vitamin c hard candies that I take 3 times a day. I'm also a religious drinker of tea (always with honey). In a typical year, I usually get one big cold and that's about it. I'm down and out for a week, then have a bad cough that sticks around for another week, and then it's gone.

I would maybe try and skip calling your child's doctor right away. I know that's hard, but if you can learn how a cold cycles through your child, it can be extremely helpful. That way, you can know if your child really needs an antibiotic cycle or if the cold just has to work its way through.
