I am one of the mamas that raves about sodium bicarbonate. The doctor prescribes it for us. It comes in a 650mg tablet and for my 4 year old, we give him 1/4 of the pill.
We actually were able to decrease the amount of antacid both boys were taking and their stools are great. And I rarely hear complaints of stomach aches.
With my 8 year old, he has definite signs of delayed gastric emptying, so we also do Iberogast for him. Which is an herbal supplement that is supposed to stimulate the stomach to move the food to the intestines. He swears that he feels a difference with that.
If he is having troubles with Zenpep, you may want to consider trying another enzyme, if you have not already. My boys have great success with Creon and they are both SEVERELY pancreatic insufficient!

Ask a way if you have more questions!!

missa

Sodium Bicarbonate has helped my 9 year old daughter with CF as well. We give her 1/4 of a 650 mg tablet as well with her Creon enzymes when she has a meal and or snack. We got the ok from our CF doc prior to starting this. The reason we started this was because my daughter's enzyme Pancrecarb was pulled form the market by the FDA. My daugher can not take Zen Pep. It does not work for her at all. She had been on Creon prior to her being on Pancrecarb, but her stools weren't good and she was falling off the growth charts. She is now 9 years old and 84 pounds. My daughter is also severely pancreatic insufficient as well. Another good thing about the sodium bicarb is it's CHEAP. I got a HUGE bottle 1000 tablets for $17. They will likely expire before we use them all.

Of course, you need to discuss this with your child CF doctor first.

Can you use sodium bicarbonate with a g- tube?? She will only have night feedings but i am assuming she can take it with her enzymes during the day? She takes creon and her weight is not improving. She is in the hospital now waiting for her lung function to go up before the g tube is placed. She has been on prevacid for 6 years but i have not noticed a difference with it? She does not have acid reflux. She is constantly complaining that her tummy hurts!!
I hope this will help?! How do you determine the dosage?? Can i try it over the counter first??

Many Thanks!

Blythe,

Does your daughter swallow pills? Sodium bicarbonate tablets is over the counter. It is very"old fashioned" so our drug store does not carry it but if you talk to your pharmacist they can order it for you or you can get it online. Sodium bicarbonate is just baking soda. The dosage was just what we our nutritionist and doc thought was safe for my daughter to take. Actually, my daughter is the only one at our CF clinic to be taking her enzymes this way. It comes in 325mg tablets and 650 mg tablets. If your daughter is in the hospital right now I would talk with you daughter's CF doc/nutritionist and or pharmacist to see if this would help her. I give the sodium bicarb with each time I give her Creon. The dose I use is 1/4 of a 650 mg tablet which is 162.5mg if you want to be exact. I noticed an improvement in my daughter's belly aches almost immediately; within 24 hours. She gained almost 5 pounds within a very short time...It's worth a shot? The only reason my daughter's doc let my daughter start this is from me asking... You need to talk with her doc obviously to make sure it's ok but it has helped my daughter ALOT.

We also had a significant increase in weight...7 or 8 pounds...PRAISE GOD!!! I think we are the only ones also, that are taking sodium bicarbonate in our clinic...the nurse sounded pretty stunned at the progress when I talked to her last. Not sure how to administer them with a g-tube...I would think you could take regular old baking soda (I would recommend organic) and mix it in a little water and squirt it in???
Yeah it is really cheap!! Our insurance pays for it completely, but it looks like the pharmacy only charges them $5 for a months worth.

My grandson has been on creon before and doesnt work, the zen-p worked to start with and now doesnt work, they uped them to 6 with meals and 4 with snacks and no change.
he is not gaining any weight. his mutations are d508 and L467p that makes his cf severe i dont know if that is part of his problem, their are only about 20 cfers with this mutation and i have yet to talk to someone with this mutation. i read the post on here daily and get more info from you guys than our cf team. This forums and blogs are a blessing to us Thank you all
