All parents are different. Not all will be as straight forward with their children about CF as yours. It is a parent's instinct to protect their child from the things that can be potentially harmful. I am not disagreeing with you however because I do 100% agree on the fact that a CF child should be disciplined like every other child so as to keep them from being a rotten bratty "i deserve this and that" sort of kid... it is a pet peeve of mine when parents do not discipline and cannot control their children...but that is a totally different thread!!!

Wow,

While I agree that many parents go overboard trying to keep their kids safe, I have to defend the reason. The parents on the forum are doing the best they know how for their children. All the kids here have different circumstances and must be raised differently. As we learn more about CF, we must update our style of parenting. Just think about the ways our clinics have changed the way they conduct business. When we first started going to clinic the kids all played together, all used the same equipment, shared hospital rooms etc.

Since my son was diagnosed (1991) so many new things have discovered about CF, and as a result we change our lifestyle to accomodate those new things. When my kids were little it didn't occur to me to worry about where they played. Then they were diagnosed with a mycobacteria that had never been seen IN THE WORLD. Scary? It wasn't until they became very, very sick that we found out how to treat them, and even then it was only a guess.

Fortunately, my children recovered. But if my doctor says- keep them away from aerosolized dirt and standing water- I WILL! I'm not going to keep them in a bubble, but I will teach them what is safe for them.

It is very difficult to imagine raising a child if you are not a parent. All you have as a basis for judgement is your own upbringing. The way you were raised may not be the best way to raise another child. While your advice is well-meaning, please don't be so quick to judge until you a a parent yourself.
