Something to Ponder

I've been debating whether to post this for several weeks, so here goes. The ears are connected to the nose and throat, infection is common in all these places and is probably capable of traveling between them. We treat people for ear infections and place isopropyl alchohol in the ears (swim ear) to dry out water. However there seems to be very little information on pre-emptively treating the first sign of infection by treating the throat, nose, and ears regardless of where the first symptoms appear.
I started putting drops of isopropyl alchohol in my ears for plane flights and I had this bottle sitting in my room so I started using it more often, anytime there was a bit of scratchiness in the throat. At this point I'm doing a few drops three times a daymore often if I'm fighting something along with the neti pot (be very careful combining with ear treatment)and vitamins, gargling with salt water, etc.
One day I didn't have any swim-ear in stock the weather was lousy and I knew I was on the edge of getting sick so I did something crazy and tried ethyl alchohol (hand sanitizer) in my ears and it worked but I'm still trying to find safety data.
Anyway we know there is a nose-throat-ear connection and that ethyl and isophropyl alchohol are good at zapping bacteria on surfaces in a different way then antibiotics. We know that Isoprophyl alchohol and other substances one would not swallow are commonly used in the ears. Which theoretically allows a different method of combating infection and maybe even a delivery method for a limited number/type of medicines
Does anyone else use a similar method to fight/prevent colds rather then an ear infection?
Has it helped you?
Have you ever talked to a medical professional about it?
Is the theory sound?Annecdotally it seems to make a signifigantdifference in the number/severity of colds I get.
Is it safe? How much is to much?
Please use caution if you decide to try this, feel free to do your own research, and ask any medical professional who is open to new ideas. And please continue all regular medications this only a possible complimentary treatment that has been of some use to me.
Thoughts?

I believe you are on to something.
There is a definite connection between the ears, nose, throat and the lungs. I have heard it said many times that the sinuses seed the lungs. (meaning if we have a certain bacteria in our sinuses it will end up in our lungs.
That is why the neti pot is so useful. It is also why a sinus infection left unchecked can turn into a lung infection.
I don't have any experience with hand sanitizer or rubbing alcohol in the ear, but I have poured a capful of hydrogen peroxide in my ears and it has helped with sickness. Icame across this "remedy" on the internet and interestingly it says it will only help if done within the first 24 hours.
I pour in the H2O2, let it sizzle in the ear for a few minutes, and then turn and do it to the other side. The excess will drain when you put your head up.
There is no harm in H2O2 (that I know of) and as a bonus it will remove ear wax

I have heard of using isopropanol to dry the ear and prevent (not treat) swimmer's ear. The question I have about this hypothesis is that most of the bacteria involved with ear infections are in the middle ear (hence otitis media). The isopropanol would probably not cross the tympanic membrane (earwax is created by glands to keep the TM soft and waterproof) and if it did (in the case of ruptured TM) it would burn like hell. In the case of H2O2 it's been shown to be necrotic, cytotoxic and genotoxic. Even when used as an oral mouthwash for debridement, it's recommended to dilute the 3% solution with an equal amount of water. I've heard of using diluted isopropanol and/or diluted povidone iodine as a home remedy for animals with ear infections. I've also heard of diluted isopropanol and vinegar to remove excess earwax. Also diluted hydrogen peroxide to remove excess earwax. I would think twice about dumping harsh chemicals into sensitive structures. My advice would be to treat ear and sinus infections early with antibiotics to prevent seeding of bacteria in the lungs, rather than tinkering around in the medicine cabinet.

I would have answered last night but I kinda fell asleep in the middle of replying...oops

Please read the following link

Havoc, I'm refering to the part of the ear canal prior to the tymphanic membrane... not the middle ear. Pay special attention to the pathogens that cause such infections. I pasted the most crucial paragraph below.

"The bacterial pathogens at the top of the list are Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus, followed by a great number of other gram-positive and gram-negative species.[9] Candida albicans and Aspergillus species are the most common fungal pathogens responsible for the condition." Wikipedia

I've been using swim-ear, auro-dry, etc (not pure isopropyl alchohol, though it is high concentration) in my ears at the first sign of infection of the throat/nose (not ears) for more then ten years...and I'm pretty sure its not just a placebo effect....how and why it works is what I'm trying to figure out

However I'm trapped in CF/PCD/other mucus clearance disorder limbo (which is why I rarely post) so I honestly don't know whether detailed annecdotal reports from me are of any use to others and am trying not to rely on such data in investigating this. Maybe by protecting the ears the body has more resources to fight elsewhere? Perhaps bacteria travels though this space even though fluid doesn't...and is destroyed I'm still trying to find anatomical diagrams on exactly what the outer ear canal is near in a useful fashion

Anyway I'm nearly asleep at the keyboard *again*...so goodnight everyone. I'm going to hit post and hope I was coherant
