By before bed I mean it's part of my evening treatments. I do my vest while doing HS, and that helps me get a lot of good stuff out so that it doesn't cause a problem for me during the night. I finish up with my treatments about 1 hour before bedtime.

I usually do my evening treatments right before i go to bed, doc never said anything about not doing that. Plus my respatory therapist said not to use inhalers while doing the vest cause you won't get all the medicine in your lungs. If Im in a hurry though and need to finish I will start my vest while in the middle of HS or Tobi, but I always use a nose plug, cause I think it might help with not losing so much medicine. Does that make sense?

I dont believe i have any problems with waking up and having a pain but I do feel like Im more stiff in my lungs after waking then after I start my treatments they arent stiff anymore. ITs like I stretched them back out or something.

I get them too from coughing too much.. One thing that helps is to put one of those medicated Icy Hot patches on there.. They also have one that is just pure heat that is like a heating pad. The Icy Hot ones will numb it to where it doesn't hurt so much. I hate getting those pains - Sometimes it is just torture and you can't move.

Another thing to do is to make sure that you don't lay in the same position for a long time after a coughing fit or after breathing your meds.. Something about this just makes your muscles sit in the same position and you get really sore. If I'm going to lay after my meds, I make sure I change up my position every few minutes (put my arm above my head, roll over, etc.)

I have chronic pain in my chest wall as well as within my lungs...probably from coughing and mucous plugs. My muscle tone in my chest is poor, I have neuro disease which has affected those muscle groups so it almost looks like muscle wasting with me. Unfortunately, my muscles don't tolerate alot of coughing without cramping or getting very sore, charlie horse like sore. It does hurt to breathe when my muscles clamp down like that. I am on pain meds chronically to help that but I also enlist the help of my kids to help massage the troubled areas. That helps some too along with a heating pad.
The other type of pain originates from my lungs is when I get plugs, those do hurt...aching within my chest is what that feels like. I can pinpoint where the plug is. I will do extra treatments and the vest to bring those up. If it doesn't come up, then I just cough and cough...it is so irritating. Many times I wind up lavaging my lungs with saline (I have a trach so it is easy to do) to try and loosen the stubborn plug. When it comes up, it is instant relief!
Nights and mornings are the worst when it comes to these problems...I know that pooling definitely happens with me. I have to work very hard to bring up crap that has sit in my lungs overnight...thank god for all of the meds and vest therapy that is available or I would be screwed!
Christina, I hope that you find something that will help your pain. Hugs, Jenn
