Sore toe...just one side

So I have been having this pain in my big toe on the right side for a few weeks now, off and on. It seems to come and go. I thought at first it was the shoes I wore one day at work. I have not worn those shoes since the first time my toe hurt and it started bothering me again yesterday. The pain is on the bottom of my big toe knuckle and like I said, only on one side. I did not injure or drop anything on it and there is no bruising. I can't really tell if it is swollen because the big toe on the other side is always swollen (because of a prior problem...but that one doesn't have pain).

I didn't know where else to turn to ask, according to webmd...well I couldbe dying. LOL. I was thinking maybe stress fracture or webmd also said gout. Am I too young for gout? I am 28. I can't really stay off my feet, thats the problem. I work full time and am on my feet the whole time I am working. It is very difficult to figure out. The pain seemed to be worse when I was laying in bed last night, it was throbbing. But when I got up to pee it was ok...not great, but ok. It is slightly better with motrin

Can anyone think of other reasons for this one sided pain? Should I call my primary care doctor or my CF doctor?

Hey Caitlin,
I dont have any answers for you.. If I were you, I would go see a podiatrist.. I have had several problems w/ my feel, & my foot dr. always knows exactly what to do He also knows a fair amount about CF which to me is a plus.. Hope you get some answers & relief soon !!

Yeah, I would mention this to your doc, could be a stress fracture or even gout. I know as CF'ers, we are more prone to gouty arthritis,(http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21719891) it usually affects one joint, may involve stiffness, pain and swelling. If it is gout, there are medications that will give you relief.

Hope this gets figured out and you feel better soon!

Was thinking gout as well. Ask to have your uric acid tested. Foods high in purines cause this. CF enzymes are high in purines, as is red meat, certain types of fish, beer, spinach etc etc.

GOUT would be my first thought.
Been there done that, it sucks. See a doc, get some meds, they really really help.
Alcohol consumption always sets off my gout, as well as eating a lot of stuff like lamb.
I've gotten gout expensively in both feet, wrist, finger, elbow, knee. The worst attacks and the most common are the feet, specifically the large joint on the big toe. Get your uric acid tested! The first time I had mine done it was REALLY high. Since I was only 25, the doc didnt believe the results and kept insisting I had a fracture they couldnt find. He sent me home with NO meds and with my toe splinted. Finally the pain went away, but it took almost two weeks. Then I started having regular attacks....very very painful. Gout is primarily genetic, as well as influenced by the metabolic instabilities associated with CF and diet. Both my grandmothers had it, but not into their 60's. I got it very early thanks to the CF.
