Thanks for all of your responses. That article was quite helpful, Jenn.

Sorry, Andee, can't just drop off a sample when I have it - it's a 2 1/2 hr. drive! I could take it to my local Internist, tho.

I wonder why I am not very productive, compared to so many others? I have PA, my PFT FEV1 runs 44-33%, my last POX was 90. I know I have considerable obstruction, so why don't I get anything up?

Oh well, it was a thought . Your clinic could probably be able to make arrangements with your local internist to do that and have it sent to the right place, with the right instructions- can't hurt to ask!

In my experience, swabbing was done to obtain a sample if I was suspected of having a sinus infection. My typical pattern would be that I'd start with a sinus infection, and from there it would get to my chest. I was rarely able to get stuff up because I didn't have much lung involvement until I was about 17.

It's possible that if you're not getting anything up, it's because it's just so darn sticky. Have you tried something like mucinex (or the generic equivalent with guafanesin)? I take a caplet of it before bed and that keeps me from getting too gummed up during the night. Just a thought.
