Sputum Culture

I was with my daughter and her annual Pediatric check up. This pediatrician is affiliated with CHOP, where her CF center is located, so he has access to some of the lab tests.
While he was searching for a Cholesterol test we had done with her annual bloodwork, I noticed the Sputum culture from our last CF clinic visit in December and asked him to click on it.
I truly expected to see 'Normal Flora' but there was other stuff listed that I did not recognize. unfortunately he clicked it closed right away. I understand his position and told him I'd just follow up with my CF Dr.
so.
what kind of things can they find? should I worry?
1 time they cultured MRSA. but only that one time and haven't seen it again.

what to do?

I'd have just asked what the culture showed. It's your own daughter's results, I don't see any reason for him to say no. My mom was always very on top of every bug I had, every test result that came back funny.. You need to think of the results as hers, not the drs, so you have every right to see them. My docs now know that I want to hear about any new bugs that show up, and will explain each of them to me if I ask, and spell them for me so I can look them up later.

Bugs that they can find? Well Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas Aeruginosa (PA) are the two most common in CFers I think. Other less common ones are MRSA and Cepacia.

In a perfect world, you would have been notified if there was anything that needed to be addressed and treated. Hopefully that is the case. Probably what you saw were things that are not something that can and/or need to be treated. Just ask at the next visit or call and ask someone at the CF clinic to review her last sputum culture and let you know if there is anything of interest in it.

A lot of the times I ask to see the results, sometimes I have seen things that I don't know what they are either, but I'm told they are not anything to treat, so I think it's not uncommon to see things in addition to "normal flora"
