Last summer the RT had DS inhale some hypertonic saline while vesting before a sputum culture. Brought a lot of stuff up, but then turned around and swallowed it, sigh! But I was amazed at how junky it made him sound.

As an adult CFer myself, I don't remember spitting into a cup until I was in my late teens. I think I had throat cultures through middle school at least! I know treatments and times have changed (I was born in 1976) but I'd just thought I'd share.

PS -I've never had a bronch for the sake of a bronch. Only had one bronch once because I was already sedated under general anesthesia for sinus surgery, and that was in 2006.

My doc in general doesn't like to do bronchs "for the sake of doing bronchs." I agree with Tonya... yes, they are commonly done, but they come with a good deal of risks, risks that I wouldn't want to take for asymptomatic kids just for the sake of getting a specimen.

A throat culture is probably sufficent if they aren't coughing up much stuff anyway. If they can though, coughing up mucous and spitting it out is going to be more accurate in general. (you asked how, well that's how. it's pretty much as simple as cough + spit into the cup <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">)

Do your kids bring stuff up when they are doing PFTs?

Sometimes I just ask for a cup when I do PFTs, then I can get a culture right there and don't have to take it home and mess with bringing it back the next day.

As for bronchs, I've never had one done. I suppose since I'm able to bring up stuff pretty well while doing PFTs there's no need for it?
