Hi guys,

I'm sure some of you have had this problem at some stage but iv been coughing up bloody sputum, small enough and I'm pretty sure it's coming from my lungs although my nose has been a little bloody recently also. Iv been doing really well recently and havnt had any chest infections so not too sure if I should be worried or not....how long should it be left if in small amounts? Any help would be great thanks! :)

I have been told, by a few CF specialists, that a small amount of blood is normal. If it gets to the quantity of 8 oz, you should go to the ER where your CF Clinic is located.

I've been having increased problems with hemoptysis during the last year. It definitely freaks me out whenever I cough up blood, but small amounts are OK. When I'm coughing up blood (more than streaking), I've been told to go off inhaled medications (e.g., hypertonic saline, pulmozyme) and flutter/acapella choice/etc. until 24 hours after I stop coughing up blood. During this time, I do "active cycle breathing" for lung clearance (see: http://torontoadultcf.com/daily-living/active-cycle-breathing-technique-acbt), although I never find this works as well.

"Streaks" of blood are totally normal and just result from irritation more than anything. HTS notoriously causes "steaking" in a lot of people.

Even minor hemoptysis isn't cause for concern unless, as others have said, the volume of blood exceeds 4oz. Never had any out-and-out hemoptysis myself, but have had bloody streaks a few times when my lungs have been raw!
