Thanks to each of you for the replies!

Mel-you are exactly right, that is where I heard it!! It's all coming back to me now. I knew I had recently heard something about Social Security and participating in research.

LouLou, thanks a bunch for taking time to find those links! The TWP and SGA get so confusing! I've read it all a million times and still get confused. I'm not working at all so I don't think I'm at any risk for going over the $700 per month. The study reimburses a flat $50 per visit plus mileage. After the first initial 2 visits you only go in once every six weeks. For the first two visits combined I'll make around $200(including mileage) in a one month period, but after that I'll be making roughly $100 (including mileage) every 6 weeks.

That is excellent advice about getting the mileage paid separately. I would not have thought of that at all, also about the 1099. I hope the clinical study specialist at my clinic will be able to figure out how to do that. She seems really new to all of this and learning as she goes.

So, next question, do I need to report this to Social Security now? I know that if I would return to work, even part time, I'm supposed to report it to them. It seems crazy since I'd be earning so little, but I just don't want to make one misstep with these Social Security people.

Thanks again everyone!!

I second LouLou's post, and in regards to the being able to deduct out of pocket medical expenses as your spenddown, this is ONLY applicable when one is on SSI. This does not apply to SSDI, which is what this question is based on.

I am on SSI and I'm doing a drug study right now. It's the second one that I've done. SSI says that I can make up to $75 a month and it won't be counted towards my income. I have to send them a copy of my check every month. Each visit that I have is supposed to pay me more than 75 but my clinic is working with me and just sending me 75 a month until I receive the total amount. I have also heard of people taking the money they get and having it sent to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation or not getting paid at all. I know SSDI is different but maybe you can talk to your clinic and they can figure something out!!
