SSDI/Medicare

I have a question for anyone on SSDI & Medicare.
Did you have to apply for Medicare separately, or does that automatically come w/ SSDI? I undstand that you can't get Medicare until 24 months after your first SSDI payment, but didn't know if they just automatically start you on Medicare after the 24 months or if you have to ask for it.

It is 2 yrs. and automatic but you have medicaid until that kicks in and ssdi takes 5 months before it goes into effect so you should also apply for supplemental social security b/c once approved you have it immediately
