Staph and a cough

Well our almost 3 month old's throat culture came back positive for staph again, this makes it three times since March 16.He has been coughing more in the las week also. On March 16 the clinic in MI had me up his xopenex but the Dr. down here in OH doesn't want to do anything for the cough or staph which has been going on for a month or more.I am wondering why the Dr. doesn't want to put him on any antibiotics, wouldn't it be better to start him on antibiotics now before it gets worse? I don't understand, I'm so frustrated this is just one more thing that makes me want to change clinics. We are not liking the Dr. or his way of treating our son.

I culture for staph aureus (not MRSA) and I do not take antibiotics for it. The reason my doctor doesn't prescribe them is that she doesn't want the staph to turn into MRSA.

My clinic will only treat the Staph if there are symptoms. She is coughing so she should probably be treated. My daughter had it with a cough but the cough went away just soon after we found out she cultured it. So they never treated it and said they usually don't. (because it can cause it to turn into MRSA, I guess..)

Same here. Emily has cultured this as well. Unless she gets sick they don't treat it (and this would be significantly sick; for example something involving congestion, cough, fatigue, sputum that is different in color or amount than her baseline (this is an important symptom), possibly fever.) During times of illness we pretty much double the frequency of her vest/med sessions and if that doesn't help after several days then we consider antibiotics.

eta> However, if this dr is not treating your child in a way that makes you feel confident that he is being well cared for, that is a HUGE red flag. Even if any particular protocol happens to be the right one for a given problem, you should listen to your instincts and keep in mind that this isn't the first time you've felt this way. I would go ahead with seeking a consultation with another center; another team may well be a better fit. CF is a lifelong condition to manage and you need to feel good about where you are taking your baby for his care. He deserves nothing less than the best & the more comfortable you are with his caregivers the better things will go. <img src="i/expressions/heart.gif" border="0">
