TOBI will treat Staph Aureus. TOBI will not treat MRSA, just to clarify

Tammy,

my daughter is on Zyvox now as well. Usually it works great, tastes gross. My daughter has become very smart, even after her am dose of Zyvox she says chocolate chips please! So yes at 7 am she was eating chocolate chips after her Zyvox. It's the one med she just hides to take. She was doing good on the Zyvox her cough close to gone, then she got another cold! Stuffy nose increase cough, this is what i'm dealing with today. My plan is to wait til Monday and check in with her pulmo doc, she still has 6 more days of Zyvox so hopefully that will keep it in check. Unfortunately, like ya said there aren't many options when you have MRSA. Maggie 's had Vanco 2 summers ago and the Picc was a nightmare to get in. I'm hoping to avoid that this winter but we'll see.

Hey guys,

Thanks for all the replies. I currently take TOBI for the Psuedo I grow. As for the Staph I grow it tends to vary on cultures - sometimes it shows that it is MRSA others it is just regular Staph.

I can't take Colimycin - well I could but it would NOT help me - all of my cultures for BOTH Staph and Psuedo show resistance to Colimycin. I know because I have asked about taking that med in the past.

I took Bactrim daily or every other month (when I was not on TOBI) before I turned 21. When I changed docs to the adult side my old doc said that Bactrim can cause serious problems if you are on it long term - what those problems were he never said. I have just realized that all of my flareups in the past few years have been caused by MRSA/Staph and I really want that to stop. My lung function has decreased greatly in the past few years and it is a nuisance.

As for the comment on Bactrim not helping if there is a flare up - I agree with that. I felt for the longest time that Bactrim did NOTHING for me, but I am not realizing that it pretty much just kept the Staph under control - maybe didn't kill it off but kept it from running rampant in my body.

Who knows - I am just gathering info for my docs appointment at the end of the month. I have alot of stuff to talk about lol - this, ports, sinus surgery and that is just the tip of the iceberg lol.

Thanks again guys,
Lindsey

My son cultures staph almost every time since diagnosis, but the doctors never treat it unless it appears to be causing symptoms (which it almost never does). I'm not sure what they'd have him on if it was constantly causing problems though. Sorry probably not much help just figured I'd add my 2 cents.

I usually always culture MRSA, but this time i also cultured PA. While in the hospital I was on Vanc, Meropenum, Tobramycin all IV. I used to do Bactrim ( i am allergic to sulfa drugs so i had to be desensitized to it) everyday but the Dr and I decided that it wasn't doing me any good. Now if I ever want to go back on it I have to be desensitized again.

A couple of years ago, I was feeling pretty crappy for the longest time & after being on IV's to treat pseudomonas, I still felt bad. I then called the doctor and asked what all had shown up on my latest sputum culture & was informed that I also cultured MRSA that wasn't being treated.
I can't remember if I checked my own drug sensitivities & asked for doxycycline or if the doctor just Rx doxycycline, but after a couple of weeks of good ole doxycycline, I felt MUCH better. Now if I feel like I need an oral med "tune-up" I usually ask for doxycycline & it seems to help.
Minocycline is also a good one. You may want to ask your doctor about trying either one?? I don't know if it would be good for daily, maintenance type use, if that's what you're looking for, but you could sure ask.
