STAPH

I just wondered if there are any adults w/cf out there that have tested positive for staph & been able to beat it or does it always come back? If you were able to get rid of it for good, what meds did you/your Dr use?

I have been battling with staph for the last 2 years and have been on and off IV meds. I've used everything from tobra, cipro, zosyn to other combinations of bactrum, zithromax, etc. I have yet to see any real success but I am continuing to press on. I have just fininshed a run of steriods and that has seemed to bring a change in my lungs. Best of luck with whatever you try.-C.J.-22

staph is a funny thing, most people i know grow it intermittently but dont really have any trouble with it......for me it is a NIGHTMARE, causes me all sorts of probs and am constantly on and off IVs trying 2 fight it off!i am on long term oral fluclox and the usual IVs are meropenem (allergic to ceftaz) and tobramycin. also started TOBI nebs recently (in the UK you are on colomycin unless you are "bad" enough to qualify for TOBI). more recently my docs have used teicoplanin, which targets MRSA but it was only coz my staph is so stubborn!!!another tip is if nothing seems to be working, a week of IV fluclox before returning to oral as normal sometimes kickstarts things. hope that is useful! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Thank you for your responses. My Dr has me on doxycycline & it has done wonders. However, I found out that my sputum culture not only showed staph, but also aspergillus, which may be what the doxycycline is for?? What is your experience (if any) with aspergillus??

the doxycycline will be for the staph, (its also used for mrsa).aspergillus is a spore that is in the air all around us. some people (including quite a few pwcf) are allergic to it, and it is this allergic reaction that shows up. commonly treated with steroids to bring the inflammation down.

YES..... our son was very serious, got a boil after wresting practice. months later, many HUGE painful boils on his body, staph a. diagnosed. AntiBiotics worked but everytime we would stop them, he would get boils again. 5 months. Then I read that stopping antibiotics can cause boils because all good bacteria (flora) has been killed too. We were in a vicious cycle for over 5 months. We were very sad that this came into our home and familyand body. i didn't see much hope. I felt like we had the plague or something.

so I researched online tons, got info from immune disease specialists, went to a good naturalpathic doctor, and then came up with a plan. today, 3 months later, NO BOILS, and his excema is all but gone. he gets a few ingrown hairs but we if treat them right away with tea tree oil , they disappear before turning into bad boils anymore.

i do think staph a. colonizes in the nose so we treated our whole family with bactroban in our nose (cutips work) at least once a day for two months. (twice a day works but hard to remember) We still do it now but only once a week every month as a preventative measure. hand washing after touching your nose is a must. we added hibiclens in all our liquid soap dispensers so everyone gets sanitized. wash out under your fingernails too. keep them short till you get this under contol.

daily cleaning: Lysol only works, not bleach. Hibiclens works. All laundry in hot water with hibliclens, lysol, and your laundry soap. DO NOT USE THE SAME TOWEL TWICE. Lysol wipes work great in each bathroom. Everyone wipes the sink handles, toilet seat and handle after each use. he takes a daily shower using hibiclens on a clean washcloth. We put tea tree oil in his lotion and he lotions after each shower. He dusts Tea Tree Powder in his pubic areas front and back. Any sign of an ingrown hair gets treated with 100% tea tree oil on a cutip immediately on the spot. Tea tree oil any boils at least 5 times a day for 2 days. cover with bandaide so it stops spreading till drained and dried up. we treated the boils topically that way and eventually they stopped coming back. it was a long time on antibiotics and we knew it wasn't going to just stop immediately. he did get a few good ones after that but we kept them covered with tea tree oil and they did go away. i use lysol fabric on the couch, chairs, and carpet where he sits, had the carpets cleaned and had the carpet guy put lysol in his cleaner. regularly use lysol spray on the switches, door handles, keyboards, mouse, anything we touch, to sanitize this germ out. when he had open sores, i put cleaned sheets on the couch and loveseat and changed them regularly. change his sheets every other day at least, while he had any open boils to keep from spreading this aweful germ any further.

He now takes fish oil and borash oil (Omega III) three times a day for his excema. He takes Kyolic Garlic 3Xday, and Kyo-Green (kelp)3Xday, and multi vitamins to boost his immune system back up from the antiB's. I had him on pro-biotics for three months to help get his immune system back to normal from the long use of antiB's. When he does not use the lotion, he starts to get them back, same as if he missed the kyolic garlic and kyo green. they keep the germ off of him.

i will pray for you and your family and wish you success in fighting this super germ.
