Stared Zantac-- intestinal destress

I started Zantac a few days ago. I did great the first day and then all of a sudden my stomach started to get messed up. I had been dealing with constipation before the Zantac and now all of a sudden the constipation is resolving. Is this normal?? My stomach gets upset with my morning dose but is just fine with my evening dose. I also have TONS of burping and digestive sounds (upper GI rather than lower GI). Not quite nauseated but stomach is also not settled... like there is bubbles in my stomach and is relieved temporarly by burping or rubbing my stomach gently.

Should I wait it out or call my Doc?? I was so hoping that Zantac would work as it used to work and I am allergic to all the proton pump meds. I took Zantac a few years ago but they took me off of it thinking I needed to be on something stronger.

I don't have anymore heartburn (that is sweet) but not pleased with the stomach upset and burping. Could all this stomach up set be from the previous constipation moving or from the Zantac??

Call your Doctor, that's what their for. Tell them everything, even if it doesn't seem important. I take Previcid myself.

Since it is the weekend, stop taking the morning dose. I wish I could knock this one off. Hyperacidity or the chronic gastritis you have described is best treated with medicine you can't take.

Try Tums or Pepto Bismal (sp) in the morning if your stomach is sour. Possibly you are taking the Zantac before rather than after eating. Thanks for updating us. I'm still thinking about this, so I might have an idea later.

Aaargre! You probably do have bubbles in your stomach filled with poison gas that burns the upper stomach. Simethicone (Gas-X) breaks the bubbles and forces the HCL gas back into solution. Gaviscon or equivalent has a good antacid with simethicone formula.

I dealt with gastritis when it was much trickier issue to manage. In fact most of the management was switching from one problem to treat another. Usually it was at the expense of suspending treatment on the first. Like thee bad TV channels, you choose one. This may be why I am so vested in helping. I had the best lousy protocol available from age 11 to now so I have seen 52 years of doctors treating this.

For nearly 20 years my stomach has been free of gastritis because of proton pump inhibitors. When you can schedule an upper endoscopy, it would be prudent. It sounds like you might have a stomach infection like H. Pylori, the bacteria that causes gastrtis and ulcers. Many CFers who have/had stomach problems will test positive for H. Pylori because we carry antigens from an early infection so a scope down the gullet can sample the stomach walls. While they're looking around they can check your esophagus, pyloric valve, duodenum and peek at your bile duct opening. This is good anytime you have unresolved gastritis, but I was thirty something when I was scoped so treatment is possible without one. See what you think, I will do the same.

Aaargre! You must be frustrated, sorry I haven't been more helpful. You probably do have bubbles in your stomach filled with poison gas that burns the upper stomach. Simethicone (Gas-X) breaks the bubbles and forces the HCL gas back into solution. Gaviscon or equivalent has a good antacid with simethicone formula. Without proton pump inhibitors (PPI) gastitis is going to take routine and fast reactions to upset stomach treatment. Tums are packaged like candy because they need to be taken right away and purse or pocket is where you can have them all the time. Another long acting acid reducer is Prevacid as suggeste. It is well worth the try if you haven't already. Maybe this can work over antacids and gas surfactants.

When my doc prescribed Zantac I had no side effects whatsoever. I think you should contact your doctor. I don't think what you're experiencing is normal. Hope you get every thing worked out.
