Starting Marinol

Thanks, Kris...

Do you think this is something unique to CFers? I've read and heard that Marinol helps lots of cancer patients on chemo gain lots of weight and also that its used with success for AIDS patients. Maybe it only works for them for some reason? Is it possible we metabolize it completely different?

Hi, The docs just started my youngest, Rachel, on it. She's been on it for about a week and a half going on two. I was aprehensive about it simply because we'd requested Megace. We had good results with Megace when my oldest daughter used it. But they didn't want Rachel on it because of the glucose issue. Although, Anna was on it when with CFrD and no one brought it up then.

After looking up the info. on-line and the dosages available I decided to let Rachel try it since she was inpatient at the time anyway. We refer to it as her "pot in a pill". So far she seems to feel it does make her hungry but it's not a long lasting thing. That she's hungry all day or even throughout the day but only for a little while. It kicks in and wears off. BUT, she is on the smallest dose, 250mg once a day. Which is what I would have asked for if they hadn't prescribed it that way. Rachel only experienced a "woo" feeling once, while in the hospital. The floor was wavy she said. As you can see by my signature photo Rachel is a petite girl, just barely 5'. She'd lost alot of weight, down from 98 to about 84. (Thank you college, her freshman 15 went in reverse) We, she, mostly wanted someting to boost her appetite to help her gain her weight back faster while we was in the hospital and get over the hump which she felt she'd hit at about 95 lb. Her goal weight is 100. She's never had trouble gaining or maintaining before and we don't anticipate their being a problem now so we are only thinking of her using the Merinol for about a month, just til she gets home for Christmas break.

So that's our/her experience so far. She's driven her car with no problems and it doesn't make her sleepy. That was the plus of being inpatient when she started it, we'd know how it was making her feel before she needed to drive.

Not much info but I hope it helps.

You know, I just thought of something when I reread your last post Sonia.

It is possible that if it doesn't work very well for some CF'ers that they may need to take an enzyme with it for better absorbtion.

Anna has to take three enzymes with her Prograff (one of her anti-rejection meds). At first they had her try one, then two and landed on three. Each time making the medication level in her blood better. This meant that they didn't need to up her dose of Prograff just to get it to the right level.

Additionally, we have been told that the CF vitamins and supplements like calcium should also be taken with an enzyme.

Just a little added info.

Liza - I did the exact same thing by losing the freshman 15! I actually didn't start investigating appetite stimulants though, until after college. Once I graduated is when I really tried hard to gain weight (back at home with a stocked fridge!) -- and realized I couldn't do it on my own and needed help... actually a little scary when you're really trying and can't gain a lb.

I asked the Dr about appetite stimulants. He explained megace and marinol and I said, 'we have a bottle of marinol in the fridge!' After a bit of confusion, I explained my mom has ovarian cancer and they had given her marinol for her extreme nausea during chemo. It didn't work for her at all - so it was just sittin in the fridge. So, we tried that first. Didn't do anything for me either... maybe it was a bad batch, lol.

But yea - Liza has a point about the enzymes. I was told to take the marinol 20 min before eating, so it's possible I hardly digested it.

Sonia - I'm disappointed to hear that about the remeron though; I had thought of that as maybe a possibility for me! I've slowly lost the megace weight over the past few years and could use a reserve again...
