Hopefully the stem cell research ban will be lifted in the United States and clinical trials can begin on growing and replacing damaged lung tissue in PWCF. For those of you who may be interested, there is an upcoming CFRI (Cystic Fibrosis Research Inc.) Annual Education Conference at the Sofitel Hotel, in Redwood City, California, were CF Researcher Dr. Richard Mollard, PhD of Monash University, in Melbourne, Australia will discuss Stem Cells and CF and Growing New Lung Tissue to Repair Damaged Lungs. The conference will be in 4 days. For those interested in more information, you can go to http://www.cfri.org

There were a bunch of replies this morning and now they are gone. What happened? Did someone erase the political comments?

Hi Kylie, Ok, I'm not a political expert or anything but here goes: I think maybe a year or so ago, Bush (Republican) signed into law a ban on all stem cell research in the US with the exception of a few (100?) stem cells that remained. This was a big deal because of all the promise stem cells hold and because so many other countries are doing great research with stem cells. Scientists started leaving the country to research, etc. It's a big point in this fall's presidential election. Last week at the Democratic National Convention (Kerry's party) Ron Reagan Jr, whose father was actually a Republican, made a very good speech about stem cell research and again, how much promise it holds. This was a big deal because A) stem cell research is big in the election this year and B) Ron Reagan Sr was a Republican, so to have his son making a speech at the DNR was unusual and shows how heated the feelings about stem cell research are. So that's probably why you heard about it on TV, since the DNR was last week, and now John Kerry's campaign is in full swing.

As far as I am aware - stem cell research is legal, it just isn't federally funded. It is still ok for privately funded research.
