Sterilizing nebs

When we got DS' first nebulizer the head of the RT program was telling us about sterilizing them -- boiling them for 10 minutes and indicated that they USED to tell people to use vinegar, but no longer do so 'cuz it doesn't kill germs.

I do however, use vinegar sometimes if the water is too hard -- to get the hard water deposits off of them. Did this a couple times a month before boiling the nebs because our water softener stopped working and we had to get a new one.

We boil our nebs immediately after treatment, whether it's a mask or mouthpiece. There is one kind of nebulizer that cannot be boiled, because when you take it out of the water, it's gets pretty warped and cannot be used again. Make sure you use a kitchen timer though, because we already lost nebulizers and pots from forgetting about it. The smell of melted plastic in th house isn't pretty either.

We have enough nebs for an entire week. So this is what we do:

We have 2 airtight containers, 1 for clean nebs and 1 for dirty nebs.

Every Sunday I take the dirty nebs out of the box and soak them for 5 minutes in a mixture of HOT water and antibacterial soap.

Then I put them all in a stockpot of boiling water for 5 minutes.

Then I let them air dry on a paper towel on the counter. We also put an additional paper towel over the top of them while they dry so that no particals or dust get on them.

When they are completely dry I put them in the Airtight container that holds clean nebs.

I rinse with filtered water, soak in isopropyl alcohol for 10 minutes (some times), shake them out and shove them in the Germ Guardian. A bit of a germaphobe, but better safe than sorry. Plus it doesn't take that much time. I used to boil my nebs, but they never seem to fit back together as easily afterwards. And with the space cadet I am, I would leave them on the stove and forget about them until an hour later! Oops!

I just got the Germ Guardian last week, and I LOVE it! Thank you to all who suggested it here on the forum. I have now joined the Germ Guardian fan club! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif" border="0">
