Steve Irwin was a family favorite. He will be missed.

Thinking of his wife and two kids.

It's sad that he has left a family behind, but I think he had
ABSOLUTELY NO BUISNESS DOING WHAT HE DID all the time putting his
life in danger like that, and messing with mother nature the way he
did, and always messing with those poor snakes and crocadiles and
alligators.... if i was an alligator, i would have bit him years
ago!!!!!

I must concur on this one, you play with fire......

The stunt he pulled with his son in his arms as he fed a 20 foot croc was beyond what he was all about, it was tottaly irresponsible.

It is sad that he has left a wife and young family.

I read that he was advised to wear a stab jacket when filming the stingrays, he declined, if only.

He didn't "mess with mother nature". He gave his life while informing people worldwide of the beauty, fragility, and sometimes deadly nature of wildlife. He has done more for mother nature and the animals on this earth than any single person has ever done. It's horrible that his family is left behind, but they will forever be proud of him and comforted because he was doing what he was passionate about. The world will miss him.

also, i have heard no such thing about him being advised to wear a stab proof vest. can you please give us a link as to where you read that? i would like to know where that information came from. no one wears stab proof vests here when they swim with stingrays.

i agree cfmomma. i certainly dont see anyone else doing as much as he did for wildlife.

ok the bit about the stab vest was related to me second hand, it may not be true.

And I whole heartedly agree with what you say about what he done for nature, all I was meaning is that he, and others who work with wild animals, live a dangerous life. He is not the first wild-life expert to loose his life and he more than likely wont be the last, and for what? to educate us and entertain us.

It is a sad loss.

Many of us have been swimming with sting rays, including my children. This was not one of Steve's typical adventures. If he'd died from an attack of a croc, snake, aligator, etc. then I would have to say, "Well, he knew the risks."

Thing is, he died from a freak accident. No one in Austrailia has died from a sting ray "attack" since 1945. You have a much better chance of being hit by lightning than dying from a sting ray "attack". If the string ray had simply stung him, there would be no issue, instead the barb slipped past his rib cage and pierced his heart. That is indeed a freak accident and a tragedy.

yes, i had a feeling the stab vest thing was just a rumour. ditto the what claudette said. its very rare. stingrays arent usually aggressive and usually flee if they feel threatened. i have stepped on a few before and they have never stung me. they just swim off quickly. many people swim with the stingrays, sharks are in the same tank too, in our states aquarium because they are so gentle and you can feed them. definately a freak accident.

how many people do you think will let their kids swim with stingrays now ?

Freak accident or not the fact remains that a stingray could behave anyway it wants, and it has a big sharp barb that could pass your ribcage.

Its really unfortunate that Steve's death will probably cause people to think badly of stingrays. Most of his work with animals was to show people that animals like croc and snakes are not icky and bad, but beautiful if they are treated with respect.

Terri said in one of her first interviews that she hoped this wouldn't happen, but we know it will.
