actually craig. there is an island just 30 mins from where i live called rottnest. a very popular family spot. its infested with stingrays. on one particular beach, heaps of kids would swim there. this is where i have stepped on a few and where many others have done the same too. it was never a reason for anyone NOT to go in the water. no one kept their kids out. it was either have rays nearby or dont go in the water at all, which would render the whole trip pointless. no one was ever playing with fire as you put it. the whole 'playing with fire' BS means nothing here. if we thought we deserved to get killed everytime we went into the ocean no one would bother going in because there are so many nasties. what a life that would be! no beach!
just to show how easy freak accidents happen in our waters, a man got killed by a shark on one of our popular beaches a while back while swimming in shallow water. no one ever dreamt that this would happen. sharks dont usually come THAT close to the shore. was he playing with fire? no. did he deserve to die? no. it was just a freak accident. end of story.
