actually craig. there is an island just 30 mins from where i live called rottnest. a very popular family spot. its infested with stingrays. on one particular beach, heaps of kids would swim there. this is where i have stepped on a few and where many others have done the same too. it was never a reason for anyone NOT to go in the water. no one kept their kids out. it was either have rays nearby or dont go in the water at all, which would render the whole trip pointless. no one was ever playing with fire as you put it. the whole 'playing with fire' BS means nothing here. if we thought we deserved to get killed everytime we went into the ocean no one would bother going in because there are so many nasties. what a life that would be! no beach!

just to show how easy freak accidents happen in our waters, a man got killed by a shark on one of our popular beaches a while back while swimming in shallow water. no one ever dreamt that this would happen. sharks dont usually come THAT close to the shore. was he playing with fire? no. did he deserve to die? no. it was just a freak accident. end of story.

Germaine Greer speaks with some authority on this. She was almost eaten by a

i too was saddened when i heard about steve irwins' death . in the uk he is known more for "messing " with snakes and crocs than anything else. sir david attenborough is "the" king of the natural world, in the uk at least.<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

<div class="FTQUOTE"><begin quote>Freak accident or not the fact remains that a stingray could behave anyway it wants, and it has a big sharp barb that could pass your ribcage. </end quote></div>

Yes, and so could my family dog/cat act anyway it wants resulting in a freak accident causing my death. I could trip over the damn dog/cat, the dog could knock me over causing me to bump my head and die.

More people died from cat scratch fever (aka benign lymphoreticulosis or nonbacterial regional lymphadenitis) in the last decade than sting ray "attacks".

WELLLLLL,  ALL, I am saying is that everytime I turned on
animal planet and he was on there, he was always doing something
really, really stupid like throwing a rope around the crocs neck
making it really agitated, or wrestling with alligators, or poking
at snakes!!!!! LIKE I SAID BEFORE.... HE HAD ABSOLUTELY NO
BUISNESS, doing any of that~!!!!!!!!! WWHOEVER wants to argue with
me so be it, I don't give a rats a**, because there is always
someone who wants to argue for the sake of arguing, I really don't
care what you all have to say, I am just stating what i ALWAYS SAW
OH THAT GUY!!!<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif" border="0"><img src="i/expressions/beer.gif" border="0"><img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif" border="0">

do you even know why he was putting ropes around crocodiles, goingup? or did you just completely miss those parts? do a little research on crocodile culling my friend and then you will see why he would capture and relocate them instead of leaving them there.

<b>Goingup</b>- that guy dedicated his life to conservation. He did an interview where he said the reason why he gets so close is to get peoople interested in what he's interested in. If you're interested, then you care. And if you care, you're more likely to help fight to protect those animals. He wasn't just running around catching crocs for the hell of it.

Exactly, He was doing what needed to be done to help the animals. He did what most were too scared to do and he was willing to face the danger to save the animals. Is it cruel for a parent to vaccinate their child, or to strap them in a carseat? No, you do it to protect your child even if they don't like it. One of my episodes of Crocodile Hunter was when one of the snake handlers at his zoo was bitten by a snake. The natural inclination is to get mad at the snake, but Steve's policy was to put the handler on probation. If the handler got bit, it was because he did something wrong or was careless. The snake was only defending itself and doing what came naturally. I found this philosophy very interesting and eye-opening and it changed my attitude about how people deal with animals.

Kylie, have you ever gone to the Australia Zoo? I would love to go there someday!

No I didn't miss your point it's just what is the point of arguing over the internet?
All that really matters in the scheme of things is what <i>you</i> think about this particular subject.
If another person wants to disagree, or heck even be completely ignorant about a subject, then let them. Does it really matter that they disagree with you? When you say something such as <i>"and to be as rude as You, I DON"T CARE WHAT YOU THINK !!!!!!! </i> you're just provoking the other person and that's why arguments/flamewars start.

Which is why I posted 'If neither of you care why even post? Seriously.'
What is the point of posting that? So you disagree with <b>goingup</b>, what do you want to do with her do you want to convert her to your way of thinking? I dont know what youre getting out of it. Do you want her to go "you're right!" and then tomorrow have her tell her family that everything she's thought about is wrong and that she is going to be volunteering at a zoo? Perhaps she knows more about this subject than you, perhaps her job has her dealing with animals, how do you really know that she is wrong and you're the right one?

Like the rest of people I'm sorry to see steve irwin go but he's not that much apart of my life that I feel grief over his death. Freak accidents are just that, freak accidents.

At one point or another in my life having people 'see my way' all the time one the internet was an important thing for me, because good golly I couldn't be wrong, or somebody else couldn't have an opinion that didn't coincide with mine. There are people out there who will always have a different view point than you. It happens. Perhaps Irwin did help save the animals and raise a lot of money for them but one can also see that in a different light as infringing upon the animals territory for the camera. After all there are other ways of raising money for them that doesn't involve getting right up in their faces. Additionally studying animals does not necessarily require violating said space on front of a camera, naturally it looks good and probably brings in more money, but who is to say that's the right option when there are other options available.
What I'm getting with this is <i>think</i> before you post. Yours is not necessarily the only valid opinion out there.

The even sadder thing is that since Steve's death there has already been a mass slaughter of sting rays off the coast of QLD where there dead bodies littered the shores, their barbs deliberately hacked off *sigh**

senseless and something that steve himself would have of course been against....

I knew the rays would be at the centre of human ignorance, which doesnt surprise me with mankind.... pathetic really

makes me ashamed to be a part of the human race....

if any species deserves extinction it really is US

"if any specied deserve extinction it should be US"

How on earth do you figure that one out??! LOL! A bit dramatic perhaps?? But yes, it is very sad about all the dead wee stingrays being killed <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif" border="0">

It is very dramatic saying that we as in the human race deserve extinction but thats just the way I feel...

we are the only species that kill for fun (hunting as a sport)

kill for power (wars)

kill for what isnt even ours (theft, hold ups etc)

kill for greed

kill to show off

and we do this on a daily basis

thats just to name a few....

every other species kills for food not fun, they will fight for territory and sometimes kill but it isnt as often as what people do....

Humans are suppose to be "the intelligent race" and yet we let the world die around us, we create wars, we create conflict, we create greed and dont learn from past mistakes!

we have the power to change things, and yet we are so hell bent on killing, and power, that we couldnt be bothered using our knowledge to change...

One other example is there is talk about bring back extinct animals like the thylacine, I mean wtf we drove them to extinction, and now we wanna bring em back to stick em in a zoo and say omg Im so talented....

why bring back something that we had a direct hand in killing when we cant even learn from it ? and still drive certain species to the brink of extinction and then madly try and save it before it is lost forever when we could have prevented it in the first place

as a race we sux! hehe

hehe sorry, I get a lil passionate about this
