Sticky stuff from mediport dressing...

My mediport is accessed pretty frequently and I usually do all of my "tune-ups" at home, therefore I change the dressing myself. Does anyone have any tips on how to get the gross sticky left-overs from the tape and tagaderm and everything off of your skin? It sticks around for days sometimes, even after washing and using a ton of rubbing alcohol. It's irritating to my skin, not to mention about as aesthetically pleasing as a heap of trash. I know there is a liquid specified for this but I can't seem to find it anywhere. Any tips?

I really don't know what to tell you because i dont have a mediport. But when I had picc lines and central lines I had the same sticky stuff. I washed it with warm water I get most of it off but some of it is still on but after a few days it came off. Sorry that I wasn't much help.

i cant think of what they are called but they make little pads (that are kinda like the alchol pads, individually wrapped) and they are specifically for getting the sticky tape off of the skin.. ask your doctor and they could probley give you some at the office.

I was going to suggest the individually wrapped pads as well, they are called adhesive remover wipes. Good luck!

Hi, Melanie.

I also have a port, and very sensitve skin to boot. I get the same reaction with the dressing. I usually just use a few adhesive remover pads right after removal of the dressing (gently, though, so it doesn't irritate the skin any further), and wait a few hours until the skin is less irritated. Then I take a shower with one of those exfoliating scrunchies (you know, the puffy things on the string?), put some body wash on that and scrub the heck out of the port area. There's ususally a little bit of the adhesive left that doesn't come off right away, but not enough to worry about.

Hope that helps.

Would baby oil loosen this up any at all? This would be gently. I don't have a port either, but have used baby oil in the past for residue type things....just an idea.

you could try a different dressing next time. i find tegaderm to be the stickiest so naturally it will leave more behind. i use opsite, which is less sticky and less irritating, but isnt as tough as tegaderm.

When I was younger I had to drop a nasogastric tube down my nose every night and would have to tape it to my face so it wouldn't come out. The skin on your face is sensitive and so I HAD to find some good tape. I used Tegaderm cut into strips and that seemed to do well. I used the little packets of adhesive remover and they worked great!! I also used a skin prep that was in little packets also, It created a barrier between the skin and tape and made my skin less irritated. I don't know the exact name of the stuff but I got it through my home health care agency. Good luck.

Uni-Solve Adhesive Remover Wipe from Smith-Nephew, received from our home health care. Our port accessing kits (CVC Dressing Change Tray DYNDC1282 from Medline) contain a skin prep wipe. Best wishes to you.

Thanks guys.

I had a clinic visit today so I picked up some "adhesive remover wipes" from my nurse. They gave me a ton.

Sweet. Thanks.
