Stomach aches!!!

Seems lately if I am not constipated then I am getting really bad stomach aches after I eat certain foods. So far it has been red meat and pizze. The aches last sometimes days and in return my appetite gets out of whack and I do not feel like eating. I did take more enzymes when eating the above foods but it does not seem to help. I am afraid now to eat!!!!

I am also scared that my CF is making my digestion system even worse.

Any ideas, suggestions, similiar problems?????

I too have had similar problems when eating pizza (from certain restaurants). There is only one place that we get pizza from that hasn't given me stomach problems. I also took an extra enzyme thinking that might help. But, low and behold, I started getting stomach cramps/pain and had to make FREQUENT trips to the bathroom. I don't know if it is the actual pizza or maybe those specific places use the same ingredients ???.

A few years ago, it seems like I was having stomach problems more frequently. My doctor decided to switch my enzyme medicine. I was on Pancrease and he switched it to Ultrase MT12. They must have worked better because since then I have gained several pounds (more than I like - lol).

Is there a dietician at the clinic that you go to? She/he might be able to give you some ideas. Or maybe talk to your doctor and see what his thoughts are. Good luck.

Jennifer,
I can totally relate to your problem!!! red meat, animal fats, and especially Pizza are very hard to digest foods for CF'rs!! I LOVE Pizza, yet after too many bouts with a sour stomach, had to make it a less frequent meal. But, when I had a stomach ache last over a day, I was afraid to eat anything (at least anything fatty) for a few days.
Depending on the climate you live in, if you are in a hot climate right now and have the air-conditioner or fan on at night, it's not good to let your stomach get cold. I have to go back to putting something around my abdomen to keep it warm, so I don't have those same kind of swings from constipation to the runs.
When my stomach hurt so much, yet I needed to eat something, I would consume baby food!! It is the most simple to digest and is probably better than "adult" food anyway!
When my stomach got back to it's cycle, I went back to the regular foods, but still concentrated on staying away from high fats.
Other factors to contribute to stomach aches that I've noticed is changing the sleeping and eating patterns. If I end up waking up much later, and eating at different times, my stomach starts to give me problems. Also, eating late at night is not good, either. I used to have midnight snacks all the time while in the States, but was "forced" not to eat them when I came to Japan. When I was in serious need for some nutrition late at night, I ate simple sugars, like jam or jelly, to pick up my sugar level until I could get up in the am to make breakfast.
Anyway, when the stomach gets out of whack like that, I suggest eating very simple foods until you feel you can eat a proper meal without the stomach aches.

Thanks for the replies. I am going to call the doctor today because this sour stomach aches have been too consistent and usually I do not have that many problems.

I am scared it is an obstruction. How do you know? And what do they do for it???

Thanks for the replies it really helps!

I have been having problems lately with certain types of meat too. Stay away from that and have some other type of foods. See your doctor. I would start eating more fiber.

Nurse at doc's office said to take Mirlmax regulary and just see how often I need to do the Mirlmax and then adjust accordingly. Maybe I can get away with the Mirlmax once or twice a week or something.

This stinks!!! Literally! HA HA

I had a problem with red meat and certain pizzas also. Its not always CF related. My best friend has the same problem and she does not have cf. I also just had my Gallbladder removed 6 mos ago and I can tolerate hamburgers now. Have not been brave enough to try steak yet. But I really dont miss red meat that much anyway. I can however eat venison that never has bothered me.

I had a VERY similar problem with Bacon and some Pizza's.<br>
I came to find out that some CF'ers can't handle certain
preservatives. I had to lay off bacon (believe me, that was HARD, I
LOVE bacon), and certain quick bake foods.

ive been there myself with pains and that and it disrupts your life big time.Drink loads of water 2.5 to 3 litres a day have all bran flakes and possibly try to get your docter to give you laxatives ie lactulose and parvolax. It may be that you have a tendency to get blocked up (ie a side effect of cf)
