Hi All...i am 15 weeks pregnant with CF and am totally completely miserable. I have been constipated for about 2 weeks now, my CF center said to use miralax, which i did and it worked great, but then called my OB to see if it was ok to continue use and they said they only recommend colace, metamucil and citricel. The problem is all of these are only stool softners it seems!!! I tried metamucil, and colace and have gotten no results...I need something more! Did any of you have this problem, and what did you take for relief? I am so frustrated! I have been eating fiber and drinking water like crazy...i feel like i am going to burst! Any help would be much appreciated...thanks!

Becca,
I am sorry you are feeling so miserable. I am only about 7 weeks and have had mild constipation but not bad enough that I have had to take anything for it. My list of safe meds for constipation that my OB gave me has Metamucil, Colace, Surfac, Fibercon, and Milk of Magnesia. I didn't even think about Miralax not being on that list until you mentioned it, because that is what I have used in the past. I know that doesn't help you much, but I guess if it gets bad enough, I would try going to the doctor or the ER. You might need a suppository or an enema. I hope you get to feeling better soon!

Yes I had the same problem with both of my pregnancies, and both times the pain was so bad I wound up in the ER.
With my first pregnancy, I was 7 weeks, and I had ripping pain in my lower belly. I was SURE at the time that something was wrong with the baby or one of my organs and we went to the hospital. Turned out to be constipation and gas.
My Cf doc told me to go home and drink 8 glasses of prune juice over a 3 hr period. The next day I felt completely better, but I kept drinking the prune juice, which is a natural laxative, through my pregnancy.
With my current pregnancy I had pain below my right ribs and ended up in the ER again. It was also constipation and gas, (but also a tiny gallstone trying to move.) Back on the prune juice. That stuff is amazing. You get used to the taste, its natural, and loaded with iron and vitamins that are actually good for the baby, plus it really works. If you are really backed up I'd do 5-6 glasses and eat low fat, light meals for the day. You'll probably poop tons the next day. And then every day drink a glass.
Also, make sure you are taking enough enzymes, and you are never ever skipping them. Eating smaller meals helps, and drinking pineapple juice really helps too. Pineapple juice breaks down stomach acid, which eases gas and bloating.

Another thing I forgot: this sounds pretty disgusting, but something that we use in the hospital a lot for patients that are really constipated is to warm up some prune juice and mix it with Milk of Mag. We call it a brown cow. lol. I know, it sounds nasty, and I have never taken it, so it might be, but so many nurses including myself swear by it.

Thank you all so much! I'm doing much better now with all your advice. Thank you so much! I think the lighter meals really helped out <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif" border="0">
