strep pneumonia

My 11 month old has had a sinus infection for a few weeks now. Did a round of Bactrim, and now Augmentin. Also put him on prednisolone. The steroids seemed to have gotten rid of his cough, finally. They did a nasal wash and culture last week. The results came in...still staph (few) and also strep pneumonia (moderate). Dr. said the drug they usually use to treat this is for adults, and children with anthrax. Only other option is IV antibiotics. He called an infectious disease specialist and was told it should be sensitive to the Augmentin. So, we are watching very closely and hoping symptoms don't return after the antibiotics stop. I was told it is not strep as in strep throat, but it does cause pneumonia. Does anyone have any experience with this???

My daughter has cultured it a few times. She never responds to oral antibiotics for anything she cultures so we always have to end up doing IV meds...that is not to say your son will not respond. I hope the best for you both.

Thank you. We will see...he is fine right now and finishes the Augmentin today. Hopefully, he won't get sick :)
