So Maggie has been complaining of a sore throat; tickle in her throat, does look a little red inside. Started last week; no fever.  appetite good.  SHe's tired cause she woke up early from her cough; you can hear she has extra mucus on board.  Any how; I called her CF doc and asked to double up her Bactrim, he said fine.<div><br></div><div>Now I'm second guessing myself.  Could she have strep and no fever?  Usually you do not cough with strep throat(talking non Cf'ers since Maggie has never had strep). I mean you could have a sore throat from coughing and a virus. </div><div><br></div><div>I made an appointment with her regular pediatrician for tomorrow to have her swabbed for strep but I #1 hate bringing her in to the doc #2. I get afraid they are going to mess around with her too much; ie prescribe something unnecesary. Yada.</div><div><br></div><div>I guess I could always cancel the appointment for tomorrow if her sore throat is better, but I know Bactrim doesn;t cover strep.</div><div><br></div><div>When my non CF child has strep; he is obviously sick; high fever, no appetite. and no cough.</div><div><br></div><div>WWYD</div>

My kids have always had VERY red throats, and sometimes white patches on the red with strep... usually sore to the point of painful swallowing. They have always had fever and diminished appetite (I think sometimes due to just how painful swallowing is) and lethargic. When they were little they sometimes threw up or had a rash. It comes on suddenly and stays bad rather than a 'come and go' thing as often seen with viruses. As with anything else there are exceptions in how others present though...
<br>
<br>As for the ped... if it were Emily, I'd expect him to do the strep test, and if it comes back positive give her something (which of course would be appropriate); if it's negative and he still wants to give something I'd explain she's already on a high dose of a broad-spectrum abx in the hopes he'd let it go at that.

The sore throat could be caused by drainage if there's no fever. My PCP told me that a sore throat or swollen tonsils can cause more mucus and congestion in the lung. I had tonsillitis about a month ago after getting a virus that started out with a sore throat and then went to my chest with drainage and non- stop coughing. Took bactrum for the lung and still got the tonsil thing later. I feel the same way about taking all the antibiotics, because of the resistants to them all .

Yeah, I'm thinking I might hold off on taking her in just yet; I'm thinking it's a virus; and the mucus is irritating her throat as well as the coughing too. She has no fever. I figure give her a few more days; and I can always call and check in with her CF doc for a different/stronger antibitoic

I did cancel her appointment to get a strep swab. She has no fever; her throat looks a little irritated , no pus. But she does have a cough<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif" border="0"> I'll give it a few more days on the double Bactrim; if she's not better by Monday; she'll need a stronger antibiotic. Well, we had a good 2 months.
