Brandy has been really unwell since New Years day. He was eventually diagnosed with Strep throat today, and put on Amoxicillin Trihydrate. Hes finding it so difficult to swallow, even juice, and is also trying to surpress his cough because of the pain. He is so sick or popsicles and ice cream. Does anyone know of anything I can give him to help ease the pain?
Thanks in advance

tea with licorice in it believe it or not will numb the throat.

i didn't believe it until a month ago when i was desperate for anything to help my throat with my cold.

i bought "yogi" brand tea (no specific reason...it was just at my eye level at the store) that was called "throat comfort." licorice in it and it numbed my throat right up! i couldn't beleive it!!!!

When I had my tonsils out 6 years ago, I was soo sick of popsicles and ice cream actually caused me MORE pain after awhile. Only thing that seemed to really help was chewing on crushed ice and drinking tepid water. Extreme cold got really annoying after awhile. Actually, things that were too warm were also painful.

Is he able to gargle with salt water? I've had strep throat many times and found gargling with warm salt water would kill the pain for a little bit. Just make sure he doesn't swallow, yuk. Tylenol and ibuprofen seemed to help too, I'ld switch off.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. Brandy cant gargle without swallowing, so that one is out. Hes allergic to ibuprofen and the tylenol isnt helping.
Im going out in a bit and will pick up some licorice tea to see if that will help (thats if I can get him to try it, lol.) I will also try the crushed ice. Thanks again

So, I went out and bought some licorice tea.........he cant stomach it, lol. It smells nice but he gags everytime he takes a sip. I tried just the tea, tried adding sugar and milk, the last sip he nearly brought his stomach up. Hes now running a moderate fever so Ive upped his cortisol (hes also hydrocortisone dependant). Hes not eating much but trying to keep him tanked up on liquids. Tried the crushed ice, its fine while hes eating it but hurts as soon as he stops. Any more suggestions anyone?

Maybe some Vicks Chloroseptic spray (that stuff you spray in the back of your throat and it numbs it for a while) and numbing cough drops. I got some for my hubby last week when he was sick and they seemed to help quite a bit. I hate strepp, I used to get it every year as a kid. I hope your son is feeling better soon!
