Stressed out mother who needs help

I'm really stressed out about what is happening to my little boy. Josh is just 2 1/2 and he is scheduled for sinus surgery on Monday.

He has been sick today with a 100.7 degree fever. Is this going to affect the surgery? If he's still sick on Monday, will that affect the surgery? And, even if he gets better over the weekend, does being sick this close to the surgery matter?

Also, from what I've read, it seems like children with CF have lots of sinus surgeries during their lifetimes. He seems way too young to already be needing it. Is it normal to start so young?

Hey Linda. I just wanted to say that sinus surgeries are not all that bad and even though I would dread to get one now, when I was younger it didn't even phase me. I started getting them right after I was dx'ed with cf at 11 and have had too many to count. I have never had any major problems post surgery except some nausea from the anastesia and some discomfort the times they would pack my nose.

Please don't get discouraged just because Josh is already needing one and instead just know that this is going to help him so that he can feel better. It was always amazing to realize how much better I could breathe after healing from a sinus surgery.

Oh, and regarding his fever, I would definitely try to get in touch with his ENT doc because I don't think they usually like to operate when the patient has been sick--I'm not sure though, but I would definitely just call and make sure everything was okay. Maybe someone else will post regarding this.

Welcome to this site--it has been extremely helpful to me since I joined and I will be praying for a speedy recovery for Josh! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">Ginger

Ginger,

Thanks for your help.

I am definitely going to be telling the doctor about him being sick, regardless of how he is doing on Monday. I just hate the not knowing part, not knowing whether this will delay getting the first surgery of his life over with or whether we have to go through the waiting again.

Hi Linda. My son with CF had his first extensive sinus surgery at age 16 months. He has since required two more. He is 4 years old. With each surgery, he required a PICC line before to clear some of the infection first. His sinuses are just a mess no matter what we do. We do daily nasal rinses and steroids which seems to help a bit. Right now we are putting an antibiotic in the rinse since he is culturing MRSA.

Call in the morning as they probably won't do surgery if he has a fever. The recovery really isn't too bad when they are young. I think Day 2 and 3 afterwards tend to be the worst. Best of luck, I know it's scary!
