Well I think that he didn't have to be sooo rude about it!! It does suck to be treated like a germ all the time. Kj hates it when ppl stare at her when coughing.

I don't think that you should have to explain to ppl about your cough, as the amount of time a cfer coughs you would be explaining all of the time. I can understand how you wouldn't want to go into full details each and everytime you cough.

Maybe make business cards that state your not contagious and please donate money or become a donor <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

I'm sorry he made you feel bad.

He was ignorant, but that part was because he didn't understand. That part may be forgivable.

BUT the RUDENESS is his fault and is not forgivable.

I'm sure I will have heapz who disagree with me, but it is my opinion and that isn't going to change.

It touched a nerve for you and tho its understandable, you have to realize where he is coming from. To avoid steaming in anger about it, you had the perfect chance to correct and educate him. Hopefully the next chance you can cease!

ugg, i know what you mean, karen. it's easy to say don't let it bother you and everything, but in the moment it's infuriating. i was on a plane once and the air in there's really dry so i starting coughing. the lady next to me was really polite but the guy in front of me kept giving me dirty looks, then called a flight attendant to get me a glass of water. of course, water doesn't help in those cases because i can't even get it down and end up sucking into my lungs, which just makes things worse. for some reason, it made me so angry. i mean, sorry if the coughing's bothering you, it's bothering me too! it was not his place to do something like that at all. and an airplane is hardly the place to launch into a explanation of cf, even if wanted to.

I'd have to disagree with Lori, and Amy, about the guy being ignorant. According to the American Heretage Dictionary (to confirm my definition), the meaning of 'ignorant' is the state of being 'without knowledge', or 'uninformed'. So, with his ignorance, I don't think that because he didn't know, his reaction in that manner should be acceptable.
That's another point to bring up, the manner in which to react. Since most are unfamiliar with CF, some may have a more acceptable manner in their reaction, while others, like the taxi driver, would have a much more unpleasant and unacceptable manner in their reaction.
And, yes, without getting into 'genetics' and such that would probably go over his head, educating him about CF, but by giving it to him in something he might relate to, like it being 'something like ashma', which I'm sure most people are familiar with, may help with having one less un-informed human in the world. Probably, after "successfully" explaining it to them, to indicate that how they reacted gave an unpleasantness in their attitude, and hope the next time they encounter such a situation, to be a little more empathetic in their reaction.
The most important thing about explaining something, is to put it into words of THEIR comprehension level. And, depending on who it is, making it as brief and to the point, so as to not take up too much of their time (and yours) to explain it to them!
