Sun Reaction to Medicine

Happy Sunday!!

I know that most of the medicines we get with CF have Sun Warnings on them. Maybe I have just been lucky because I have never experienced any issues until now. Last weekend, I was driving in the car and got sun burnt, but it looks more like hives than sun burn. It is located on my arms, chest, and legs. So naturally, I look it up on line and it is photosensitivity.

Here is my other problem, I am starting to teach my boot camp tomorrow outside all day The first one is at 9-so that may not be bad, but the other two are in the day.

So my questions to you did your dr give you medicine? I saw on-line it said to start taking beta carotin and gave some rx pills and creams. I went to the Pharmacy, the pharmacist said to contact my dr for RX bc nothing OTC would help. She said I could try oatmeal bath, so I bought some!!

Second question, did anything make it feel better or less red or spotted. I feel like a speckled egg right now!!

I want to call my dr, but is this really an emergency. Although the Pharmacist did say it was the worst she has ever seen. Does this count...I am try to rationlize

I don't know that there's really much to do now that you are already burned. I would increase your fluid intake and take motrin, if your stomach will tolerate it, for pain. If motrin isn't enough Toradol (rx) will really kick a sunburn (or fever). There are lots of topical OTC preparations for sunburn as well, find one with benzocaine, tetracaine or lidocaine. Prevention is key, go get a nice sunblock and a big hat

I am pretty sure that this reaction is mostly internal even though the effects are seen externally.
It happened to me in college and I could not for the life of me figure out why I was so ITCHY. No matter what cream or lotion or scratching would ever reduce the itchiness.

Then i took a Benadryl. And it cleared up almost immediately. Its an internal reaction and the benadryl is precisely the thing that worked.

Though I don't know if that is good to do on a daily basis. After i found out why I was so itchy and red from the sun, I did not go back in the sun until after I was done taking the antbx.

hey pepsi!

we met during your last week at CSU at the Rec center...I wasn't sure if you remembered me. anyway, I thought I'd share my story.

I was on photosensitivity causing meds for a LONG time. Once I got to high school, they took affect. I would get rashy and itchy and splotchy ANY TIME I was in the sun. I thought stopping or changing the meds would help, and it did only for a while. Then it started happening regardless of what I was on. Diagnosis: Poly Morphous Light Eruption disorder. I'm not saying that's what you have, but keep an eye out for your symptoms to get worse...and consult a dermatologist. Once I did that, a rx for Plaquinil really helped. Also, for prevention, I was stuck just wearing long sleeves and pants in the sun. Now, however, they make clear zinc oxide cream which is REALLY helpful (I found it at Wal*Mart with the sunscreen stuff).

As far as relief...not much helped me. Benadryl did, but it makes me SO sleepy it wasn't worth it. The only thing that offered some relief was putting Noxema (yes, the face wash) on the burn/rash/splotches.

Best of luck...hope you get better!
