Ya I think that instead of trying to correct their breathing they just just take fast shallow breaths to compensate for it and it sounds like they're panting sometimes even at rest.

Infants and small children breathe using the diaphragm, it's only when they get older that they begin to use muscles in the chest and shoulders, once they mature.

Hi Vera,
Sounds like the drs. are on the right track having you in a pulmonary program. My fev1 was about 51 for a while & I wanted to get my #'s up so I asked my primary care physician (he is also a pulmo dr.) for a script for pulmonary rehab.. I love it
! I had 2 private sessions w/ the RT.. He went over diagrams of the lungs, what each part of the lung does, what happens when you have a lung problem, taught me new breathing techniques & then showed me how to apply them during exertion..
I currently go 3 x's a week. My last clinic appt was a week ago & my lung function improved from 51 to 57. I know that isnt much but I am very happy with that !

I had a doctor teach the belly breathing technique. The way he told me to practice it was to lay on my back with a book on my belly. The exercise was to try to get the book to move up and down.

Another exercise he taught his patients was to bear down on your ribcage with your elbows tight at your side. Inhale and see that your ribcage both expands front/back and side/side also that your belly comes out on inhale. That is the most effective breath.

He also worked with me to create a visual place I would go to mentally when I had a bleed to relax my body as much as possible in an effort to stop the bleeding as fast as possible.

Hi Joni! This is great news and I wish more people knew they could get this referrel before they needed to be listed for transplant. Is your insurance picking up the expense?
This IS a significant change in your FEV1. It would be best to look at raw liter numbers to get the most accurate percent of change but a change from 51 to 57 percent is an 11.8% change... certainly significant I'll say!

My insurance picked up my pulmonary rehab, I have Medicare....they did not even blink, they paid without any issues. I have been through rehab at least 3 rounds, all my doc had to do is refer me and that was it. It does help, like Joni, I experienced very significant results, all positive. It is worth it for anyone with a pulmonary disorder to go through these programs.
