Hi, On several CF lists I belong to, there is much discussion of having depression, what is depression, how to deal with depression at this time. So I thought I would do a little survey. If you would like to participate, follow the directions below and I will get the results in the next few weeks gathered and posted..I want to do a "formal , informal" survey about depression and CF. I will tabulate the results and pass along the results. Depression is a big part of our society. They say that 70% of women, over 30 are on anti depressants. These are healthy women with no CF. They say that 82% of post lung transplant recipients are on anti depressants. The best part is that it is treatable. Talk therapy, psychologist, psychiatrist, medicine and some other visualization, relaxation etc. Here are the questions, you can return them to my email address or the CF Board here.: 1. When were you diagnosed with CF? 2. How often do you do Chest Physiotherapy? By Vest? By hand? 3. How often do you do oral antibiotics? 4. How often do you do IV therapy? Home? Hospital? 5. Are you pre or post lung transplant? 6. Do you consider yourself "depressed"? 7. Do you have trouble sleeping? Not hungry? No physical energy due to feeling down?Feel that life has no reason?Feel you are in a rut? 8. Has a doctor diagnosed you as "clinically depressed"? 9.Do you see a psychologist, psychiatrist, or talk therapist? 10. Are you on a anti depressant? 11. What is the name of the drug you are on? 12. How long have you been on it? 13. Do you see positive results? 14. Have you been on a anti depressant in the past?If so, why did you get off of it? 15. If you feel you are depressed, but not on medicine for it, why? Society? Don't think it will help? You don't want to take one more drug? Any other comments: Thanks for participating. 1. When were you diagnosed with CF? officially i was diagnosed at age of 1 yr. my mother, though, knew what i had when i was 1 month old, because my older brother died of it before i was born. 2. How often do you do Chest Physiotherapy? By Vest? By hand? i don't have a vest as i live in israel, where cf patients don't practice it. i do it by hand, several times a week. i'd say three times on the average. although i ought to be doing more... 3. How often do you do oral antibiotics? i am always on oral antibiotics. always. ever since i was 10 yrs old, so for the past 10 yrs [i'm 20] i have never been without oral antibiotics. 4. How often do you do IV therapy? Home? Hospital? i have IV on average 3 times per year, every time two or three weeks, and usually at home. 5. Are you pre or post lung transplant? pre-transplant. 6. Do you consider yourself "depressed"? not at present. i was depressed for almost six years [ages 14 1/2 to 20], cf was a part of it but not the main reason. i received medical treatment, went to therapy and at some point i hospitalized myself [being over 18 at the time]. i have bad days but overall, i am not depressed anymore. 7. Do you have trouble sleeping? noNot hungry? sometimes. but i am also sick with anorexia nervosa. No physical energy due to feeling down? noFeel that life has no reason? sometimes. Feel you are in a rut? no 8. Has a doctor diagnosed you as "clinically depressed"? yes, i was diagnosed with that when i was 19. 9.Do you see a psychologist, psychiatrist, or talk therapist? not anymore. i was seeing a psychologist, a psychoatrist and a social worker during time in hospital. 10. Are you on a anti depressant? not anymore. i've been "clean" for about three months now, and i'm doing good without. 11. What is the name of the drug you are on? i used to take prozac, then switched to cipramil. 12. How long have you been on it? prozac for six months, then cipramil for another nine months. 13. Do you see positive results? prozac worked for a little while, and only when i took the highest dose [60 mg], then i went back to being extremely depressed. cipramil, together with hospitalization and therapy, did a great job. 14. Have you been on a anti depressant in the past? yes, both of those are in the past now If so, why did you get off of it? i quit prozac because it didn't work. i quit cipramil because i felt that at this point in life, i can do without, and i was right. 15. If you feel you are depressed, but not on medicine for it, why? Society? Don't think it will help? You don't want to take one more drug? irreleveant question in my case Any other comments: ---

1. I was diagnosed at birth, because of muconeum illeus.2. I do CPT 2x a day, via Vest.3. I am on antibiotics almost continuously.4. I am on IV's 3-4 times a year, I start at the hospital and finish at home.5. Pre-transplant.6. From the ages of 11-18, I was depressed, at times much more so, but there were also other issues. CF was the main cause. Now, I am very happy!7. I have trouble sleeping sometimes.8. I was diagnosed as clinically depressed 4 yrs ago.9. I see a pyschiatrist and therapist.10. I am on Paxil.12. I have been on it for 3 yrs.13. I have had god restults, though a lot of things have changed in my life, so it is hard to say. First, I tried prozac, remeron, and celexa first.14. NopeThis is a great survey! Depression is something so common with CF, but is so rarely discussed.
