I am about to start working on getting my almost 2 year old to swallow her creon. I am curious about the timing. Do I need to wait for a few minutes after she takes the creon before she eats anything? Or can she eat directly after taking them? We don't have another clinic appt until April and I don't want to wait until then to start doing this! Please help!

Hi:

I take 10 Creon 24 with every meal and snack. I take 5 as i sit to eat and 5 when I finish eating.

Evidently, CF people are slow eaters, so the Doctor decided that is the best way for me.

The instructions are, take Creon with first bite.

I really think this is a "it depends" type answer. A lot will hinge on your child's eating and digestion and may be a trial and error situation. My daughter takes hers at the end of the meal. We found that if we gave them at first bite she got full quicker and didn't eat as much....but please take into account that my daughter is technically pancreatic sufficient, so taking them later in the meal doesn't bring her any pain or digestive distress. For some kids this approach would not work well.

I've heard varying answers from two dieticians. We've been successful splitting DD's meds during her meal - beginning, middle, and end. Of course, this can be difficult if you don't know how much your child may eat! We were told that you can give the enzymes at the beginning of the meal with the knowledge that they can eat 60-90 minutes after ingesting the enzymes. Seems odd to me, but two separate centers have given us this information...

We were told to give all of it right before eating in younger kids. It is not because they need the full dose before any food hits the stomach but because it is better to get it over with so they can be free to just eat. A pancreatic sufficient person's pancreas secretes the digestive enzymes throughout a meal so I'm sure the ideal way would be to split them up. With my daughter (4), I give her her plate of food so she and my son can start eating and then I bring her the medicine and remind her to take it so she prob takes them about 5 minutes into eating. It works for her! She takes 3 with meals so if I don't know how much she is going to eat, I sometimes give her 2 and then the 3rd towards the end if she eats a lot.

I have always taken mine immediately before eating. It's worked for me pretty well, but like you're reading on here, this varies a lot! I take 6 Creon enzymes with meals and heavy snacks. One of the posts said that people with CF are slow eaters.... not all of us! LOL

I also take them before meals. I usually take 2 for meals and 1 for snacks. If i see that the meal is getting heavy i pop another during the meal. When i forget to take them before i eat i take them after the meal to save it. Sometimes it works. Others it doesnt. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif" border="0">
After a while she will form her own habits dont worry. Just make her understand she needs it and she will do fine for her whole life.
