My daughter w/ CF has been swallowing 3 enzymes at a time since she was 2 1/2 yrs. old. But my non-CF 5 yr. old has to take a prescription pill and I use the straw trick w/ her. I don't have a special cup, I just buy the straws that bend so it doesn't fall down a straight straw and she takes it w/ water.

Our CF doc and nurses said they have some teenagers that still cannot swallow pills yet, so don't worry about it too much but it's wonderful when you don't have to haul that applesauce around anymore

My son (now 5) started swallowing the pills a couple years ago because one day he and his mother were out and about with no applesauce and he asked to stop and eat at McDonalds...so he was given the news that if he wanted to eat out he would have to try swallowing the pill. He just stuck it in his mouth and drank some water through a straw and that was that.

At home we still leave it up to him to swallow pills or eat them with applesauce because it is the only way he eats any fruit and its just not a big deal.

With all the medical "work" he has to do, we have always taken the attitude that it is important to put as much control into his hands as possible so that these things about which he has so little choice do not become battlegrounds. We took the same approach with potty training and just let him decide when he was tired of diapers...and never had any arguments or accidents.

Maggie started swallowing her enzymes around 2 years old. Her motivation was she HATED applesauce I noticed Maggie would occasionally swallow things like peanuts and M & M candies without chewing. I thought if she can swallow peanuts; she can swallow her enzymes. The way I did it was put a little bit of applsauce on a spoon and put an enzyme capsule on the applesauce. I had had her swallow it off the spoon. Eventually I phased out the applesauce....Maggie was so happy not to eat applesauce anymore. I also, made a big deal out of it...Tell her what a big girl she is, how proud I am etc. Now she swallows 4-5 enzymes at a time, sometimes without a drink after. She'll never eat applesauce again.
