Any negative effects of swallowing sputum? I guess if there were I would be dead by now, but just curious what others know or think.

Intestinal blockage,
GI problems,
and just the fact that that disgusting infected puss in still inside you and not spit out into the toilet.
I used to be a swallower as a kid. Then I got my 1st intestinal block and saw all the "crap" that gets stuck in your intestines with my own eyes after my 1st butt pumping/flushing procedure....disgusting and putrid.(sorry you asked for the ugly truth!)<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"> It cured me of swallowing forever.

If I swallow a lot mucus, I just throw up. I've never had a blockage and I've been swallowing mucus forever. I spit if I'm having a coughing fit, but it would hard to get from my desk every few minutes to go spit!!

I agree with the anon poster.... I guess I would be constantly going to get a tissue or cup or something. I've never carried something around with me, though that would solve the problem, but I guess I just don't like to spit in front of others -call it vanity- (at the gym, at school, at the coffee shop, etc.), and I'd just be spitting all the time.

I've never spit unless I'm giving a culture, and never had a problem that I know of. I know its gross and can't be good for me, but its habit and I don't even realize I do it anymore unless I'm really sick and coughing an excessive amount.

For years I didnt spit in public. Now if I swallown any I get sick to my stomach. I would imagine swallowing enough will aggrivate the intestinal tract more than it is so I would vote yes it can be a problem one way or the other!

I work in an office and keep tissues or cups handy. I just make sure no one is looking in the door. I usally have to swallow a couple times a day though due to the circumstances. Any one spit out the window while driving. I caution you to be careful especially if your going to fast. You can make quite a mess.

In the eighth grade class I had a young boy say to me after I coughed and swallowed "hmmm tasty" that cured me of that problem. I did more therapy as I was embarassed to cough in public. I guess that kid saved me and I took better care of myself. I was not brave enough to say, "I am glad that you like it"

i'm sure it's a lot worse on the stomach to swallow a big mac, fries, and a coke than it is to swallow sputum. have you ever read what a coke can do around the house in terms of cleaning??

Other than maybe an upset stomach there is nothing wrong with swallowing sputum. My mom used to get mad at me when I was young for doing this but my doctor told her when I was young better in his stomach than in his lungs. I know that sounds gross but if you think about it's true. It wont give you some kind of infection in your digestive system. (Now every time I write back to someone and give advise a certain person always writes me and contradicts everything I say. Well I'm 40 years old 6'2" tall 195lbs and have done this with sputum my whole life so I'll just throw that in before I get attacked by her)

Maybe this explains why my 4 yr old daughter has more belly aches on the Hypertonic Saline. She definitely has a productive cough now and she doesn't know how to spit it out yet. I wasn't sure the connection between the saline and belly aches but now it makes sense. Does everyone agree?

Well this has been helpful. My 10 yr old (just diagnosed 11/05) was put on HS. She still doesn't produce, but every now and then she'll say her stomache hurts. She'll also get those loose bowels again (I was SOOOO glad to see those leave - and so was she!). She says it gets just below her throat, but she can't get it up. She's produced one time when she was first admitted back in Nov. As much as we try, we can't get it up all at. I would love to see her get it up, because common sense tells me it's all for the better. Maybe once we can help her to cough it out, we'll work on her trying to hide it in public.

Could this be the reason I've always had the horrible stomach cramps. I used to always swallow it. I did it bcuz i didn't want people to see me spitting up mucus all the time, that's kinda gross. Well, since i'm not in school anymore and i have my own office, i spit a lot more of it out.

Swallowing sputum is the only or primary reason for the belly aches & cramps. If you are pancreatic insufficient then food will do that without the appropriate enzymes &/or acid reducer. That is a big part of CF itself even if you dont swallow sputum. Swallowing might aggrivate it tho!
