Sweat Test Extremely High

Hi there

My daughters sweat test has come back at 106, and apparently they still didnt even get enough sweat.

This is very concerning to me, as when I read a lot of other peoples posts here, they never seem to reach anywhere near that level.

Does the higher sweat test determine the severity of CF????

I can't remember my daughters sweat test # but I know it was higher than 106. She is 8 now. She was not diagnosed until 3. At that point she was sick a lot, she'd get a cold and it would pretty much last all winter with sinus congestion and a wet cough. Since she was diagnosed and she is doing preventative therapy every day she has been very healthy. Her vitamin levels are normal, she's at a healthy weight without much effort and she rarely gets sick.

I'm interested to hear what others say about sweat test numbers and severity.

My daughters sweat came back 91 when she was a couple of months old. She was born with meconium illeus and is PI, but has continually been in the 80th percentile for height and weight. Lung health has been good. Very few colds. She just turned 3.

I have heard before that once your number is high enough to be considered positive, the actual number doesn't mean much. It does seem like there would be a correlation, but...

Thanks for your repsonses. My daughter has a mild cough, but never shows up with any infections. her main issues are weight releated, although we are flying to our specialist hospital in Aukland NZ, for a CT scan and Broncopnoscopy. She has fast heavy breathing, which they can not find a reason for, so we going for a closer look.

She was feeding through the nasal gastric tube, but continually pulled it out, so im nervous to see how she is going to go without it. But, im relieved I dont have to watch her 24/7, and hoenstly pretty much I was.

Im still waiting to met our genetics team 4 months down the track, so they may be able to shed some light on the significance of the sweat test. In saying that the numbers dont mean anything, for some reason we have had two tests, and now they are suggesting a third one to see if they can get a complete reading (enough sweat to give the full complete reading.)

Thanks everyone for your responses, and am always keen to hear what ever anyone else has to say.

Sweat chloride levels are not correlated with severity of disease. My daughter's was 120 and she is 4 1/2 and only has GI symptoms!

It absolutely has no correlation, so please don't let that upset you any further. Sometimes you will see high sweat tests numbers with the DF508 mutation (also the most common).

Like others have said, there is no correlation between high chloride levels and the severity of the disease. My sons came back at 111 on 11/15 and 112 on 11/17. So far we've had mainly GI issues. We're here if ya need us! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">
