Sweat test was normal

Sweat test results for my 16 month old came back normal. 15 & 16. I don't think the doctor is willing to do any further testing. To complicate things this is not my biological child, he is my foster son that we were hoping to adopt. The case is changing and he might be going home in the next 30 days. I want to make sure he's healthy before he goes home. I don't want a diagnosis to get missed. :-(

This is a very difficult position to be in. Those numbers are certainly well within the negative range. However, who did the test? If this is a ped or unaccredited clinic, I'd have doubts that it was done properly. Did they get enough seat? Was the sweat diluted? So many factors come into play here.

I'm having a hard time getting past the psuedo that he's culturing. However, reading back, I think you mentioned he has a trachea, and I know that there is a lot of mucus production with those. I'm thinking that it may be possible for the pseudo to take up residence in the trachea like it would in a set of CF lungs. I still feel that the meds they are trying to treat it with may not be adequate.

I hate to think that a child may not get the proper testing/care, simply because the state is paying for the medical care, and won't approve him being seen by an accredited facility. I've seen this happen in my own state, and in my own family.

He doesn't have a trach, he just had his trachea scoped during a surgery to put in ear tubes and remove adenoids. That's when they saw the white mucous right outside the lungs and cultured it.

As for the lab tech that did the sweat test....this was the first one that this guy has ever done. He did have someone there telling him what to do. They were wondering if they had enough sweat when they were done. It was just a lab inside our local hospital.

Everyone else is so excited that it's negative. I hope I'm worrying over nothing.

Oh yikes!! First sweat test ever done at your local lab? No way- he needs the test done at an ACCREDITED lab. Call your closest accredited CF center on your own and explain the urgency of your situation: that this is a baby you may only have custody of for a short time and you are very worried he may fall through the cracks diagnostically speaking and see what can be done. See if they can help you. Culturing PA as he did is still a huge red flag...

Oh wow, sorry that I misunderstood your post. Definitely get this child into the CF clinic, because sweat tests are tricky, and must be done by someone who knows what they're doing.
