Sweat test

Figured I would post this here as well, since that is what I did with my original one a few months ago. Thank you.

It's been awhile, but I originally posted some concerns after an ultrasound found our baby to have an echogenic bowel. Well, yesterday, March 12th, we had our baby, Parker. He was quite a bit smaller than expected and went into the NICU after an X-ray showed that something was still wrong with his tummy. He's been having problems eating, spitting up everything that he has gotten down, which has mostly been formula, and not seeming to want to breastfeed. He had a sweat test done today and they wanted to do a test on both of his arms, but one was taken by an IV, so he did both of them on one arm. He got plenty of sweat, but the tests came back 65 and 112, so they say that the test in invalid because the numbers are so far from each other. (Said they both are sodium, nothing about chloride?)
Has anyone experienced this? Also, any suggestions on the feeding? It seems that his tummy is just so upset that he doesn't want to eat.
Thank you in advance!

I think that sweat tests done on someone so young could throw up poor readings, they will be repeating the test no doubt after having wide apart figures. Sweat tests are an indication but most here will say that they prove inconclusive and that an 'Ambry' test should be done also.

First of all, CONGRATULATIONS on the birth of your beautiful baby boy.

Ditto, to what Craig has said about the sweat test. I don't even know why they have done one that early, our docs waited until the genetic test came back and then did the sweat test. I think the baby has to be at least 6kg to get a more accurate swet level, as newborn babies don't sweat enough to get an accurate reading.

His tummy may be sore because he has a blockage, in that case until thats sorted he may not want want to drink much milk. Our daughter was the same, they had her on iv fluids, vitamins and lipids which made up for not drinking any milk.
Or it could even be reflux, speak to the docs and see what they think might be causing it. They can test if its reflux.

Sorry to hear what your going throough, i hope things get better real soon and that your little man is on his way to recovery.

Take care and pm me if you ever want to chat.

Our dd's first sweat tests were 68 and 103 (pats self on back that I actually had to LOOK UP those exact vaules in my notes; I guess I've come a long way!)

She was 3 at the time, so the quantity of sweat was not an issue. They were taken one right after the other, but on different arms. I just wanted to post that we had a similar experience as to the values. Her 'real' sweat test that they basd the diagnosis on was 107. It was done about 4 days later.

Welcome to this world, baby Parker <img src="i/expressions/heart.gif" border="0">

Thank you for the responses and for the congratulations. We spoke with the doctor a little bit ago and it seems that we are now on the right track to finding out what is going on with his tummy. Hopefully in the next day or two we can have a definitive answer to why he doesn't want to eat, fix it, and get him to start feeding. As far as the CF, I like to say that I'm "realistic" about it and not optimistic like a lot of people. There's only so many times you can point your finger one direction . . . I'd be totally suprised if he did not have CF.
Dana - thank you for your post. I found it odd that the results were so far apart, but am somewhat relieved to find that someone else has had the same thing happen. Hopefully tomorrow's sweat test will come out valid.

I wanted to thank everyone for their responses and say that we did get the diagnosis of CF yesterday. 106 and 99 were sweat test numbers on Thursday. We should be following up today with some of the CF doctors here at the hospital. Parker is doing much better and starting to eat. Hopefully we will be able to take the IV out soon and get going home. Thank you everyone for your support and I'm sure I will be speaking with you guys soon.
