Swelling

Hi, I'm new here. My son Dan is 19 and has CF and CFRD. Anyways, we haven't had a good year with him, he just seemed to be sick for a year now, been in and out of the hospital 3 times. Well, this last time he seem to be swollen all over, I mean his body just looked puffy like he gained 50 lbs. He also complained about his joints hurting. He went into the hospital and after he was on IV antibodics for about 5 days, the swelling seemed to go away. He did his course of 2 weeks of IV meds and his Dr released him. Here we are 3 weeks later and his chest is getting congested and on oral antibodics, the puffiness and joint pain is back.

Have any of you all come across this before?

Welcome to the forum. I am not sure I can help much with the swelling, other than to say that some of these symptoms might be related to dehydration. I know that sometimes when my girls are not feeling well, we really struggle to keep them hydrated, because they tend to not want to eat or drink. After we saw how much the IV fluids helped during my daughter's first hospitalization, we really started to be more proactive about encouraging them to stay hydrated and watch electrolites, etc. It also seems to help them keep the congestion looser.

Of course, you may be dealing with something else here, so the best advice is to talk to the clinic about this and see what they suggest.

As I have healed, I have lost like 3 dress sizes. It wasn't fat. It was fluid retention of some sort. I think it's the body's attempt to dilute toxins in the system.

This happened to me when I started getting sick in college. My knees and ankles, and legs would swell up and the joing pain was so bad that i had trouble walking up or down the stairs. We figured out that this was all due to fluid renention/edema. so from that point on, i was on a steady dose of lasix. As long as the fluid was out of me, my joints felt okay. I would talk with the doc about this. Get him some relief.
