Swim team

We are thinking about having our son swim year-round. He has done well on a summer swim team and he has the chance to swim one or two times a week on a year-round team. I would only consider it because it is good exercise for him and his lungs. But the in-door environment has me a bit concerned. I have read a study a while back that the in-door swimming environment affects lung function a little bit. I am assuming it has to do chlorine levels, chemicals in the air. Possibly molds too?? I know his doctor doesn't have the answer for us. Has anyone swam year-round indoors? Just wondering how swimming in-doors affected your lung function. <div>Sharon, mom of Sophia, 9 and Jack, 7 both with CF, Grant, 2 and Paige, 8 months no cf</div>

It depends on the person. I have seen on this forum that some people have a really hard time breathing in in the warm, humid, chlorine-filled air. I didn't at all growing up. I was a regular fish and my docs were pretty ticked when I dropped swimming. I guess there is the risk of mold or whatever, but if he's getting his sputum checked regularly I would think that the excercise benefits would outweigh the risks.

Swimming definitely is one of the best exercises, but I'd be worried about mold or something. My doctor discourages me from swimming in indoor pools aswell as public pools because of the risk of pseudmonas

Swimming is great exercise. An outside private well maintained pool is best, but if it is something he loves to do I would not take it away. If it is something you are somewhat pushing him into then maybe not. If he is really into it then the exercise and his happiness out weighs the risk in my opinion. You may want to consider the amount of time he is in the pool area at one time. Say like 30-60 minutes or whatever and then make sure to get some fresh air.

Alyssa has been swimming for two years, year round three days a week inside. She just started swim team (she's just 5 now) but did preschool at the Y that included swim lessons 3x a week. She has not cultured pseudo yet and swimming has only been great for her. I can't tell what the future holds and how swim inside or outside will aggrevate her CF or asthma, but for now its going really well and is GREAT lung exercise and our docs approve.

<P>Taylor swims on a swim team that uses an indoor pool year round.  It is great exercise and she loves it!  Our doctor has no reservations about it.</P>
