Swimming in lakes

I grew up on a lake in Maine, so I swam in a lake almost every day of every summer for 18+ years and didn't culture PA until I was 23. Now it comes and goes in my cultures. My CF doctor told me PA is everywhere and that I need to live my life because, if I'm going to get it, I'm going to get it.

Swimming is encouraged at our center. It is great exercise all over and for the lungs! All we've been warned against is stagnant water and hot tubs.

I don't personally feel that wet floors around a properly chlorinated pool will be a problem, esp when it's regularly washed down ...otherwise I'd have to worry about puddles, wet pavement, my yard and greenery staying wet from dew into the daytime or wet from rain and there is PA in the dirt... when would it end? When would caution turn into something completely extreme? Lakes that are tested for bacteria levels and spring-fed as Lauren mentioned are fine with me. After all, there is PA in our tap water and everywhere she goes, and she's exposed to that daily.

Ocean swimming is, of course, ideal but not always possible. And then of course you need to shower off before leaving... in whatever source of water is available at the beach facility.

Let your kids swim. It's excellent exercise and your cant possibly avoid Pseudomonas. Every time you shower you get a dose.

I grew up swimming in every lake, pond, ocean, and nasty invested sinkhole. Like Jonathan said, Pseudomonas is everywhere. The only thing I would really urge you to avoid are birds and rabbits- they apparently carry nasty stuff that we can get. AND when I was exposed to them for periods of time, my health declined. Got rid of them, health improved. Not a statistical thing here, but suggestive enough. Didnt have the same issue with dogs, cats, or horses. (and I am allergic to ALL feathers and fur)

Yeah I would swim anywhere as a kid. We had a pool and hot tub when I was growing up. Used both until my parents sold the house about 10 years ago. We also had a lake in the backyard I would swim in sometimes and fish in all the time. We also live on the coast so we have a beach to go swim in anytime I want as well. I feel like you have to live your life and pseudo is everywhere and there is really no avoiding it.
