Swimming - what places are safe?

Hi All, I have a 2 year old son w/cf that loves the water. With summer here, and invites to go to swimming parties, I was wondering what the opinions are for a person with cf to swim at a public pool, lake, river, or ocean. Is one safer than the other, meaning less bad germs? Or do they all pose some risk? I don't want my son to live in a bubble, but if it's known any one of these could get him sick, I think it wouldn't be unreasonable to have him wait until he's old enough to understand he shouldn't drink the water. Any thoughts on this are welcome.

My only concern has been with hot tubs and after reading about how the number of particles of bacteria with hot tubs is in the millions -- I don't think I'LL ever set foot in one again either. Wanted to vomit after reading and article in the newspaper.

DS goes to swimming lessons, swims at his grandparents lake home, has gone to the ocean. There is ONE swimming pool in our town that I absolutely do NOT want him to set foot in -- it's at a hotel with a water slide and they've had numerous health department violations and LOTS of complaints. So I'm hoping he doesn't get invited to a pool party there any time soon.

People debate this often, but here is my two cents worth. I grew up swimming & playing in rivers and lakes more then pools tho I swam in those also. Now adays depending on the pool, I much rather swim in a lake. My airways are extremely sensitive so unless a pool (like our neighbors) is spotless with minimal chemicals I cant handle breathing near it let alone in it. I try to stay away from public pools, but when vacationing etc I dont worry about it as much. Its one that you have to pick & choose on personally. I am one that advocates letting them have fun!

My 2 year old loves the water too. His clinic said he can swim anywhere. They said they prefer the (salt water)beach because it does wonders for the lungs, but anywhere is fine (assuming it's not stagnant). And it's great exercise and great for the lungs.

Edited to add: They do however say to avoid hot tubs.
