Swimming

I know this has been covered so many times and in so many situations, whirl pools, indoor, outdoor, ponds, lakes, rivers ,oceans the list goes on. Well i have another situation: outdoor sea water pool. We have a pool at Gourock, it may actually be the only outdoor sea water pool in Scotland, now its summer here , we like as a family to go swimming here, is it safe for CFers.

I'm pretty sure that the fiolters they use must be good, as the water taken is from the river Clyde which has Glasgow and many other towns on it. I know they don't pump raw sewage into the water, they used to. It is all heavily treated now, but it concerns me sometimes. What do you guys think? should we stick to the inddor pools, or throw caution to the wind.

Go for it! My son swims every day in our backyard pool and he loves it. We also take him to the local waterparks and he's never had a problem. The benefits he gets from going out and having fun in the water far outweigh the potential of him getting sick. I don't worry too much about the water but I refuse to take him into the hot, humid, wet showers and bathrooms in the waterpark. We live in Texas and I only let him outside in the summer if he's playing in the water and so swimming is a huge part of life, socially and physically. I visited that site and it sounds awesome, they obviously take great care to make sure the water is safe. Take your kids, they will have a blast!!!

Hi Craig,

I too say, go for it! Last summer, we took Olivia to the local pools at least 3-4 times a week and never had a problem.
I'm actually thinking of starting her up at swimming lessons. Swimmimg is the best form of exercise for their lungs.
Go for it, and enjoy it. Don't let CF, stop you from doing all the outdoor fun stuff.
Just enjoy it (the summer), while it lasts.

Sorry I'm a bit in the dark of the dangers of outdoor backyard pools of they are maintained properly. I understand the risks of public pools etc but thought your own pool would be ok if levels are right and cleaned regularly. Can someone explain the dangers? Also, is the beach ok?

You shouldn't have any problem with a backyard pool as long as it is well maintained. The filter unit needs to be cleaned at least twice a year, and the chemicals need to be balanced all the time. I always test the water after a heavy rain or after a bunch of people swam in it. I won't let my son in the water if there is algae forming, I don't think it would hurt him but it is still gross.

If the pool (especially a public pool) has a strong odor of chlorine, it actually means there is not enough chlorine in the water. I am no chemist and I have no idea why this happens, but a clean pool should not smell like chlorine. If it does, my son does not go in the water.

Salli, the beach is the best place for your son. Salt water has no bugs/bacteria, the amount of salt kills everything.
How do you think Hypertonic Salene came about, its a high concentration of salty water.
The beach is by far the best place for any cf'er.

I'd check with your cf clinic. What is the potential for things to grow in a salt water pool environment? What temperature is the pool? Warmer temps, more things can grow. We take DS to the regular (chlorinated) swimming pool and he started swimming lessons last fall when he was two. We avoid hot tubs -- too many germs. In fact we got rid of ours shortly after he was born. Liza
