It's funny you should ask this question, because I just got back from an appointment with my pulmonologist and while he was making sure that I plan to get the regular flu shot, the topic of the swine flu vaccination came up.
While he is adamant that I get the regular flu shot, he does not recommend getting the swine flu shot. In addition to the guinee pig issue, he says that one of the side effects of the swine flu shot is a rare neurodegenerative condition called Guillain-Barre syndrome which results in paralysis. He said it's usually temporary, but that in the 70s when there was a similar flu epidemic more people died from the vaccine than from the flu itself.
In short, I have no intention of being one of the first people to try it out ... even if I am at risk for complications.
My daughter had the swine flu (not proven by blood tests, but she was infected by someone who did have it proven) earlier this summer. My GP immediately put me on Tamiflu profilactically. Today the pulmonologist said that that's good, because it means that I was exposed to the disease without getting it ... so hopefully I have built up my own immunity to it.
Anyway, just my 2 cents ... Obviously for someone who is sicker than me in general, the pros and cons might come out with a different result.
