swine flu

We went to Disney in January and when I travel, I always am concerned with DS getting sick, picking up germs, especially when winter tends to be the normal time for the flu season.

I have hand sanitizer and wipes that I carry with me. You can get travel sized lysol spray and clorox wipes. I also pack a container of saniwipes in our luggage and wipe down the remote at the hotel, door knobs, surfaces. and also have a small bottle of clorox surface spray.

I imagine Luke is going to be spending most of his time in his stroller or being carried, so there's less opportunity for him to be touching surfaces and then his mouth/nose. I guess I would remind your older children to avoid the hand to mouth/nose contact, frequently wash/sanitize hands... Lay out the ground rules ahead of time -- don't eat until hands are washed, etc.

You'll do great. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Oh and one thing I learned on a trip to Mexico... A lot of times there aren't changing tables on planes and that's where the major diaper blow outs seem to occur, so you may want to get some pull up style diapers, so you can change him standing up in the airplane bathroom since there's no room for him to lay down.

He's 21 months old, how much is he going to get out of the trip anyway? Is there anyone who could watch him for you? That would at least reduce his risk.

The risk seems low, but Disney is a mecca for travelers from around the world. Not sure I'd risk it.

I like close to Disney and the good news is that there have been no reported cases here yet. I would have thought by now we would have some considering all of the tourists we have. I am keeping my fingers crossed, but I know it is just a matter of time. To keep things in perspective though.........I read that the regular flu kills more than 30,000 people a year in the US. This has only killed one in the US so far.

Our CF doctor actually called yesterday and said she felt it was fine to go. We live near DC/Baltimore where there have already been confirmed cases and thousands of people in our community travel back and forth to the city by train every day. So she felt our risk was probably just as high here unless we were not planning to leave the house at all for the next 10 days. I have read that too about the regular flu causing fatalities. And I read somewhere that the little boy that died in the US came from Mexico because he was sick. So I think technically he should still be counted in Mexico's death toll.
And we don't really have anyone who could watch him...
I was watching the VP on the Today show yesterday and then all of the back lash from his comments on travel. I felt bad for him. You know the travel industry was having a panic attack when he said he wouldn't advise his family to travel and then they had to spend the day retracting what he said. But obviously the thought seriously occured to me and I am sure many others.
Thanks to everyone who has responded!
