Swollen, stiff, painful fingers/hands

Lately my fingers and hands have been extremely stiff and painful. My joints feel almost as if they're stuck or locked, and my fingers (especially on my dominant right hand) are quite swollen. I can't make a fist at all with my right and and typing, opening doors, etc are very difficult. My meds have not changed recently and I've been fairly healthy overall. I called my clinic last week and the response was essentially that "it's normal" without further explanation. It has never been this severe before, I was wondering if any of you have insight.

Are you on cipro or levaquin? They can cause very severe joint pain and swelling like that.

Otherwise, I don't know. I've heard that arthritis is sometimes associated with cf but have no experience with that myself. In fact, I'm a pianist, so certainly hope it's not terribly normal.

Nope I'm not... Hmm, I'll have to look into side effects, but I would've expected something to appear before now, my meds have not changed in probably 6 months.

I play piano as well, crossing my fingers (ha ha ha) that this clears up soon. It's driving me crazy.

I get this often... as a part of my CF related arthritis. I know exactly what you mean... I jammed in one of my fingers when I was little, and this is just like that... except I didn't make contact w/ anything <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"> It happens randomly.

If it becomes frequent, you can see a rheumatologist and figure out your options. If you don't have problems with hemoptysis, you have a lot of anti-inflammatory options. If you have hemoptysis problems like me, your options are much more limited.

I did buy arthritis gloves online (they are like fingerless tight gloves) and I do wear them at work while I'm on the computer if my fingers bother me. They help a little - nothing miraculous - but every little bit helps...

I used to get really bad arthritis symptoms. I would wake up with my hands locked into fists, my wrists would swell up so much that I couldn't put my fingers around them (and I've always been a skinny CFer), and my hips would hurt too badly to swing them up into bed. I guess it isn't so uncommon-the last number I heard was that cf-related arthritis affects around 10% of CFers to some degree. The way it was explained to me (although they were still figuring it out at the time, the theory might have changed) was that my body was sending dead bacteria and white blood cells to my joints instead of my lymph nodes. In theory that would mean that I should hurt more when I'm sick, but it definitely doesn't always work that way. On the upside, by the time I was 20 I grew out of the worst of it. Now my hands might get achy or I might hobble around when I walk on occasion, but it's manageable with ibuprofin (so much better than tylenol). When I was really bad, they prescribed me Vioxx which was amazing (I literally cried when they took it off the market). I'm sure they have something new now if you continue to have major problems.

I have dealt with this since I was 9 and I will be 37 this month. It is a type of CF related arthritis...but there isnt much known about it. It has "flare ups" like rheumatoid arthritis....which mine has turned into after all these years of having problems.
Prednisone does work because it is an anti-inflammatory..and honestly it doesnt take much.
I'm sorry you are experiencing this part of CF...it is a very painful one for me...
I do see a rheumatologist for it as well and am now on methotrexate, but I also have to take a daily dose of prednisone just to keep it from getting so bad.
Good Luck to you!

Thanks everyone, I have some great information to work with now. I have an appointment in a week, I'll talk to my doc and see what she has to say about it.
