Symptoms & Sweat test

My son Christian is 2 years old. He has had problems with his digestive system (mostly vomitting)since birth. He has also had diarreha and really bad smelling stools.
He had been to so many Doctors allergists, Gastro & now CF specialists. He had fat in his stool in a test in Jan., but his pancreatic enzymes were normal. He continued in the same state and has gained some weight, but is a small for his age. He looks so healthly, all of his labs are great. He has never had a sickness that required antibiotics. He coughs a lot, especially at night, but overall very healthy.
He recently had a endoscopy which all came back normal except the colon had inflammation. The Dr. wanted a sweat test. Christian's sweat test came back with a 47 & 52. We saw the CF Dr. yesterday, he seemed to think he had as much evidence that he does not have it than evidence that he does. He did the genetic test, which he said will be back in 1 month. I am very anxious and wanted to know if any of this sounds familiar? Has anyone had a borderline sweat test that has come back negative? Can anyone shed some light or experience?

Your child could very well still have CF. We have quite a few members who either had borderline or low sweat tests, but genetic testing confirmed CF.

Your son sounds like me as a child & I wasnt dx until I was 7. I had no respiratory issues per se until after my dx. What led to my dx was all digestive. I wasnt "underweight" or "sickly looking", but I was small as was a lot of girls in my family. My poops stunk to high heaven & I sat on the toilet with painful diaherea every time I ate.

I was tested for tons of allergies most of them food to no avail. I finally was referred for a sweat test which came back sky high. They didnt have genetic testing back then. Not sure what would have happened if my sweat test was borderline or low....

Did they test for celiac or swachmans disease? Both can have similiar digestive issues.....just a thought if the genetic comes back negative on CF

Hello. I remember all too well being where you are. Waiting agonizingly, looking for something to hold on to that all will turn out well. Hang in there, this is a very hard part, but it does get easier.

SOunds like you have a good doctor, who is doing what they are supposed to. My daughter had no real "symptoms", other than being born with a bowel obstruction (ok, technically that IS a symptom) -- but she doesn't cough, her pancreas mmostly works, although she has major difficulty gaining weight. We did the sweat test because of the bowel obstruction (meconium plug) and she had a 53 and 45. Our doctor also said that it probably wasn't CF. It was really surprising to me when she wound up having two genes (one REALLY rare one). I had clung so tightly to the doctor's words, I became really angry that they had said anything to make me feel like we could come out of it all unscathed.

I'm not saying that for sure your child has CF. But with those borderlines and his symptoms, it seems quite likely to me. I'm very sorry. I wish I could be more encouraging but I'd hate to mislead you.

DS required surgery at birth because of meconium illeus. Based on his symptoms, the surgeon indicated that 99% of the time it means CF. He'd had two blood tests, one came back inconclusive because apparently there wasn't a large enough sample, the other came back with two copies of delta f508 = CF. He also had a sweat test, which was 32.
