Hello,

I am new to the forum and I have been struggling in school lately. I am in Teachers College at York University in Toroto and I am having a really hard time with it. Just been getting really tired from all of the work and stuff. I was hoping there were some teachers who have CF and could give me some pointers on how to deal with everything. I have already decided to do the program in two years instead of one after I tried to do it one for this semester but I have been getting pretty tired and sick. Mainly I am asking also for support from other teachers and others who have pursued University and then onto a career. For the teachers i was just wondering how you find managing your time as a full time teacher.

I know there are a couple of teachers on here, so hopefully they'll see this & give you some input.

Hey there. I teach second grade. This is my first year teaching. I too did the educators preparation program in two years at the university level. I have to tell you, teaching and having CF is challenging and I often wonder how long I will be able to meet its many demands. I think it probably depends on how healthy you are. If you don't mind me asking, how are your lungs? Kids are walking germs, so you have to be mindful of that and stay on top of your meds. I put a lot more time in than most teachers I work with, partly because I am new and partly because I am a perfectionist. I also have about 2-3 hours worth of meds a day that they don't do. So I'm not going to lie, it is hard, but if you love it..it's worth it. You just have to manage your time well. That's the only piece of advice I can really offer. Since, I am new to this...I am still learning, but I have found managing my time, getting enough sleep, taking time to relax atleast on the weekends, and washing hands are the things that I have discovered that help. Please, don't hesitate to ask questions. I am glad to see that more people with CF are entering this profession. Hope this helped some....

I hear that the first year is the hardest..so if you can make it through the first year you're set....I hope they're right!!

I am going to agree with everything Chantel has said. I am in my first year also and it is really hard. I am actually getting an IV because my health has hurt. I also wonder how long I can do it. But the first year is supposed to be the hardest so I really hope that maybe it will get better. I feel like all I do is work, sleep and do medicine. In fact I haven't even had time to PM Chantel back<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

But if you do love it then it really is worth it. It helps to get into a school that is understanding about your situation. Teachers get a lot of sick days but sometimes can't even use them because then it looks bad to the school. So make sure that you have an understanding principal. And, make sure you know that you can't do everything. Even if I worked 24 hrs a day it wouldn't be enough and I have to accept that.

Feel free to ask anymore questions and good luck!!!

Thanks for the advice...My lung condition is pretty good I am usually in the 75-80 range for lung function and I have been like that for the last 5 years so I am happy about that. It is good to know there are some teachers because it is really hard and I find school difficult but I am getting pretty good grades. I am a student teacher in a grade 2 class and I just love it.
