Teachers with CF...

So I know this will happen in my future and I am hoping for some advice on how to tell people. I was recently offered a long term position in a classroom with a student that has CF. I obviously will be unable to work in that room anymore. I am extremely disappointed and was on such a high just being offered the position and now having to disclose the CF.

Now, I am not planning on getting a job in that school, because I am hoping to move an hour away from here with my Fiancee. What do you all do? When did you tell the adminisitration you had CF? How do you avoid having students with CF in your class? Do you work in a large school or small school? This school is enormous and I pretty much thought it would not happen...I mean 1500 kids and the one class they need a sub in has a student with CF. What are the odds?

Please do not make rude comments, I am not here to be ridiculed for the career choice I made. I have always wanted to be a teacher and am simply looking for advice from other TEACHERs with CF. I will disclose that I was under no contract with the school and was simply a sub. I was under no obligation to tell anyone (because when I have in the past it was held against me).

If you are planning to continue subbing in the school you also could say that you just don't want a long-term position right now because you are moving soon.

I did not tell my principal about CF until about half way through the year. She was wonderful and lets me have whatever time I need off. I have not had a CF child in my room or in the school so far but I am in a very small school.

I am so sorry for this because I know you wanted a long term position. Good luck with what you decide to do.

I hate this....it has to be one of the hardest moments/events related to CF in my life. Even in college, with other CFer's it was easier because we were able to avoid each other and never had classes together.

And I was thrilled when the principal asked me...I practically jumped into her arms and she knew it too. She knows this is what I have been waiting for....

I printed out some information from a friend so maybe that will help to emphasize to the principal. It sucks to be in this position.

I know of one other teacher with CF, so I know its do-able, just frustrating right now when I am trying to establish myself (before telling).

Can I just say I think it is really commendable what you are doing. You are succeeding in the career you want but with a very active conscience. It is unlikely that the child would pose a threat to you but you are making this incredibly difficult decision for their sake. Well done.

If the principal is intelligent enough, and you present her with the information, she will completely understand and appreciate your integrity. Having said that, if you have experienced negativity towards your cf in the past and don't want to risk a repeat, then giving the other excuses mentioned above would work a charm.

Best of luck! Hope everyone else out there is also looking out for the safety of kiddos with cf!
